evo 2
It will cost a lot. There was no Evo 2 brought in to the US, therefore there is no crash safety data on file with NHTSA. Since there was no US spec model of the Evo 2, where are you going to get the doors that are compatible with crash beams? I know, from a Mirage of the same year, right? OK, where are you going to get the map from the ECU that will make it emissions friendly? Alright, maybe you can make one yourself, maybe. What about the front and rear bumpers? From the same Mirage? How is the intercooler going to fit? Well, we'll pretend that you made it fit and you made it crash-worthy. In the end, it will still have a chasis code that is not on record with the government, so there is only one way for them to "test" it. They'll take your car and crash it. If it passes, they'll let you know. Then you can build another one to the exact same specs as the first one and have it "legal" for driving on roads.
Sounds like fun?
Anyway, I think the age limit on cars is 15 years now, so after they have been out for 15 years, why not just import one straight from Japan as a "collectible" and not have to worry about emissions, crasy tests, or anything else?
I've been wanting an Evo 3 for a LONG time now as a track car, and it has always been a huge hassle to do it the legal way. I know there are some of them in the US right now, and some people will swear up and down that they are legalized, but if that is the case, then why can't the same entities that deem them legal in the first place give me any info as to how I can truely do it? Don't believe the hype.
Federalizing a car to legally drive it in this country is extremely difficult and expensive to say the least.
I remember watching a TV show about two multi-millionares purchasing Porsche 959s and attempting to make them street legal.
Even with their money and connections they were unsuccessful in making them street legal.
What was the outcome of their attempts, one guy gave up after many years of trying.
The other brought it and kept it in his garage as a show piece.
