Is not driving the car everyday bad for our EVOs?
Is not driving the car everyday bad for our EVOs?
Hey all,
I was talking with a few car guys and they told me some things that kinda have me worried. They said if you dont drive the car everyday then your engine could start to rust and condensation will form in the fuel tank.
Here is the thing...I drive the EVO every 3rd day. It sits in 20-30 degree weather (yes my garage is cold) for 48-72 hours twice a week. They said I was screwing the engine up by not driving it on a daily basis. I understand some of you guys park it for the winter and do certain things to protect it from screwing up the engine...but what about people who park it for 2 or 3 days at a time in cold weather?
Should I worry and start her up everyday (let it run for 5 minutes) or is it ok to let it sit 2 times a week?
How long are we talking about before rust would start to set in? I mean 48-72 hours cant be enough for rust to build, can it?
Thanks,
Marc

Thats quite possibly the dumbest thing Ive ever heard. You have to drive it every day? I started my last car once every 2 weeks so the batterey wouldnt die during the winter. But thats just nonsense.

wow, im sorry but i really cant belive this thread. who ever you were talking to has no clue whats so ever. dude, your car is fine. as long as you park it in a garage and maintain it you should see rust in a decade
If your car sits for more then 2 weeks then just make sure you take it for a spin just so you dont have flat spots on your tires otherwise your engine and everything else should be fine...
Ever since I got my beater car, I been driving the beater more than the EVO.
now with a lot of posts going around of EVO's being stolen and vandalized I try not to use my EVO for daily chores etc....
anyhow back to the topic question, warm up the car like once a week... start up the enging and let it run for a few minutes and you;ll be fine
If ya wanna go further, geta battery tender and keep it hooked up to the car, that way ypur battery will always be at full strength and ready to rock and roll

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Dealers leave the Evo's for weeks, even months, without starting them (brand new). The interior of engines are generally coated in oil and treated not to rust, and a lot of parts are made of aluminium anyway (e.g. the entire cylinder head). The exhaust manifold does rust, but that would rust anyway and is fine (but you can always replace it with a stainless steel manifold/header).
Just a couple of times a week is not a problem. I do the same - as do many people with a variety of cars, some of which are a lot older than ours (and sit for a lot longer too)!
Thanks!

Oxidation (light rusting) actually does set up rather quickly, but not in your engine. Look at your brake rotors in the morning after a light rain. However, oxidation requires moisture, which the inside of you motor hopefully doesn't have.
The issues that are likely to develop while letting a car sit are as follows:
Dead battery
Battery corrosion
flat spots in tires
dry rotting of rubber
lifter/valve noise (until oil circulates)
maybe a couple more ...
These issues may develop if the car sits for a LONG time ... more than a few days, or even a few months. The easy solution is to just drive the car every few weeks if it's going to sit for a extended period of time.
