honestly i don't think any tint really is legal i know in NY the legal tint is so light their's no point in doing it, thats what i was told by a trooper anyway. that's why i kept mine light in order to avoid too much attention..

Actually, 35% is lighter than 32%. The number measures the amount of light that is allowed through the tint. Whenever the windows have a factory "smoke", that will cause the meter to read a lower number, not a higher one.

I think the black 20% looks good with the blue car. What do you think? It cost me $145 and is very clean. Also the shop will remove and re-apply if I get ticketed. They charge $45 for that.

I did 20% all the way around, with a brow. Since I like my privacy the dark tint is what I needed. Cost me about $120.

I have a BBY Evo and I'm definitely going with the 20% after seeing this pic. Dark tint and the blue look very good.

So far it's been my experience in PA that:

a) NO tint will pass inspection.
b) Tint ends up only being an easy excuse to pull you over.

Has anyone "legally" tinted their PA car? If so how do you get it to pass inspection?

Answers:

a) I have had my windows tinted 20% all around for a couple of years now. There is NO INSPECTION REQUIREMENT to check window tint. If a shop tells you that you don't pass because of tint tell them to get their facts right and never go back there again. The window tint part was removed from state inspection requirements years ago. You could have 5% on every window and legally an inspection station could not fail you.

b) Technically there is no law on the books that state what percentage is legal. The police refer to a chart that the DMV made up but isn't an actual law. The laws state something like "Nobody shall have their windows tinted that an officer cannot see in" That is a very vague statement and can be argued. Either way, I have had my windows tinted for a while. It really depends on the police in your area. We have some areas around where I live that they are real dicks but I just roll down my front windows when passing them then. Personally I tinted the front & sides on my Eclipse myself so that if I did get pulled over I could just take it off and not lose much money.

I know the state police now have a gauge that they put ove rthe edge of your window and based on the amount o light that passes through they do or do not cite you. Typically the citation only requires that you have the car re-inspected and the inspection station has to pass the windows, fill out a form and submit it to the state police. I know this from a previous personal experience. So there must be some standard for inspection. I can tell you the state cop and the inspection station both ha dthe same meter. This is about 10 years ago but I assume that hasn't changed.

Local police seem to just use it as an excuse to pull you over.

I guess it's sort of a gamble either way. I tried the rolling down the windws thing and it worked fine except in winter when it became an obvious pull me over flag.

I also know the actual Mitsu dealer failed my friend's Eclipse for dark tint.

I have a feeling it depends on who you run into in the inspection and on the road.

I love the tint just hate the hassle.
