AMS's shop car secrets

Considering they just posted a flat 12.0 quarter run, and that's without the upgraded clutch that will be offered as part of the stage II package...

AMS Stage II == 11-second car. Good enough for me.
I don't see in any of AMS's posts that they are running a turbocharger from an EVO 6. FWIW, it is a completely different turbo with titanium internals and, most importantly, a larger exhaust side housing. This is why it is capable of making substantially more power than the standard EVO 8 turbo. The tradeoff, as anyone who has driven an EVO 6 will contest, is slightly worse boost response. But for dyno and drag strip bragging, this is a moot point.

Peace out,
Honky

Some advice. Don't portmatch the exhaust side of the head. The step is there to fight reversion.

Second, instaed of extrude-honing the intake manifold, talk to Magnus Motorsports about producing their sheetmetal intake manifold for the Evo. Better gains, and not too far off from the price of an extrude-hone.

And skip the larger throttle body. It really doesn't benefit 4G63Ts.
Thanks for the tips!

Im on the pre-oder list at Works for the reflash Ecu.
I think its the best investment that can be made and the first step in real performance.

fuzzypunks, like you I usually have my cars modded within the first 3-500 miles. The EVO has been a bit different for me as I really want the right solution, so at 4200 miles my EVO is still bone stock as well.

There are certainly a few piggy-back solutions that offer a little more in a single package. Both Turbo XS with their UTEC, and Vishnu with the XEDE unit offer a more dynamic tuning solution. Unfortunately they are still piggy backs, and the costs reflect the R&D and hardware represented in that specific unit.

I really want an stock ECU-tuned solution with no add-on piggy back controllers. This leaves two alternatives currently (that I know of) with the Works option, and the RMR option.

I am currently pre-ordered on the Works ECU, and feel like dollar for dollar their solution(s) will net better results with less headaches(no added controllers, or cutting into ECU wire looms, no visuals for the dealerships to question), and more than likely the overall driveability will be better than the SAFC route thanks to fueling, timing, and boost being dynamically tuned within the factory control unit.

Price-wise the costs will be somewhat lower than the UTEC/XEDE options. For instance I bet the combo of the Works re-flash and "rush pipe" axle back will equal, or be very close to, the power/tq of the Vishnu stage 0. The cost of $680 (pre-order pricing)for the Works set-up vs the Vishnu stage0 at $1500, makes it an easy choice with a savings of $820.

I realize that the stage 0 does come with a full cat-back, but realistically the hp gains above the axle-back solutions just does not warrant the cost.Once you install a DP, then everything downstream needs to be matched accordingly.

Having had discussions with David @ Works, I feel pretty confident that Works is going to develop more dyno tuned re-flash solutions that should really provide enough future hp/tq solutions for most owners. In addition to the add-on "rush pipe" and throttle body intake options, I am betting that the re-flash will also be able to be combined with a full turbo-back exhaust (hopefully the DP will be designed with a mesh flex joint as the solid pipes are asking for trouble IMHO), and other potential intake and I/C upgrade pieces. I would also think that a re-flash with all of the above plus HKS cams would be a no-brainer.

Thats my track, and I am glad I have waited for a change!

Jeff

it might be more helpful if someone could list what different companies are offering with a brief description (hp gains, specific parts, etc) and the prices of each.

im just trying to learn.

Hey Honky,
The reason you don't see an EVO6 turbo mentioned in any posts is because there is not EVO6 turbo on the car. Where did you hear this? The turbo that is on the car is the front half (minus the turbine hsg) of an EVO5 turbo which is the same as our EVO8 turbo. Our original turbo is being used for upgrade experiments and we borrowed this EVO5 turbo. As I posted in another thread if someone local wants to come over and see the turbo or the EVO5 hsg that is sitting here please feel free to stop by. Please get your facts straight before trying to flame me, or better yet ask me and I'll be happy to tell you/show you anything on the car.

Ya guys let's keep this thread clean. No unsubstantiated rumors or such. This is a thread to let the vendors know what we like best and what we want as far as packages in the future. If you guys think that there is a better combinations of parts to make a package or a part to add to a package or just an item that you would like to see developed for the EVO speak out. Obviously the vendors are reading this thread and it will only benefit us as the consumers. So let's hear it.
