Arrow Legendary Mitsu Reliability

I drive a 2000 Impreza RS now and naturally was drawn to the new STi. However having seen several, I am more drawn to the Evo for its great looks. My last car was a 1992 Galant VR4 I bought in 1999 with 62000 miles. Despite pampering this car, I still had to put several thousand dollars into it including a new engine and timing belt/tensioners/etc and then having to have the belts redone due to mechanic's ineptitude. I loved the performance but was always wondering what was going to go next and would i have enough $ in the bank. My subaru has needed nothing but Mobile1 oil changes and new wiper blades in two years.

Any thoughts on the reliability of the Evo? Someone here has a great quote: Fast/Cheap/Reliable - pick two.

One thing i miss about the Galant VR4 that i know i wont get in an STi, Evo or even my RS is the sleeper aspect

thanks!

Mike

Sleeper Impreza RS? I thought a sleeper was a plain jane car that was actually very fast.

A Galant VR-4
Those cars are actually very reliable. The previous owner probably beat the crap out of the car for you to have all those problems. I know of many VR-4's that run extremely well after more than a decade of hard driving (just go to the DSM forums...)
Test-drive the EVO if you can, you will not be dissapointed. There are several threads about EVO reliability, and the concensus is that only a few isolated trouble spots exist (driver abuse...???)

yeah it was a funny car...sold to me by a rally driver in Tempe AZ...it was "his wifes car" He probably did beat the crap out of it.

The car i had before the galant was a 90 Celica AllTrac with 120000 miles...it ran forever. Must have been the great care of the previous owner and the stack of oil change receipts he handed over.

Here in seattle i seem to live in the land of $5000 over MSRP...hopefully that will change. I have no probs buying the car in say Georgia and having the road trip of my life.

thanks

Mike

I can't give you much on the EVO (give me a few more months) yet but I've had 7 years and 92K on an Eclipse GSX with the same 2.0 liter turbo motor. I've had a few minor problems at higher mileage (belt replacement/belt squeal) but that's it for motor. It's been very solid and reliable and fast.

It's a proven platform so I have no reason to believe the EVO will be unreliable if you take care of it. I'm sure it's not a car you can just feed gas and keep going, but other than oil changes and routine maintenance it should be very reliable.

My only hitch with the EVO that I can see going in is that the tires won't last very long. I plan to get a 2nd set of wheels with winter / inspection tires and then run the cords off the ADVANS in summer and after inspection.

My current Mistu was also a little tough on brake pads but I haven't heard any complaints yet from current EVO owners.

I know a guy at work who bought a VR-4 used from a dealer with over 100K miles. He's a car nut and jumped on that car as soon as he saw it. When he got it, he thought it needed a clutch but he drove it anyway for quite some time and then sold it to another guy who loves those cars (I think he owns 3).Anyway, as far as I know the car is still running in a fairly troublefree fashion and they still have not changed that clutch And BTW, that is a very neat car

You always take risk of getting someone else's problem when buying a used car..... I've owned various Mitsu cars including two '91 Galant VR-4s. I've never had a problem. Buying new cars always minimize the risk..
