Having a spare ecu
No, the ECU only has one "tune" on it at a time, but you keep as many maps as you want on your laptop and switch between them whenever you want.
Notice I said "when you DOWNLOAD it." That right there should have indicated that you have the maps on your laptop. YOu download FROM the ECU to the laptop, which is where your maps reside, and you UPLOAD one to the ECU.

That's weird, I Have an 05 ECU that I swap into my 03 on occasion.. Never had any issues.
I downloaded the rom from my 03 and wrote it to the 05, and it appears to be the same.
it kinda makes sense as they need to produce replacement ECU's that can work in any of the cars that use this generation ECU, and the only real difference would be the rom. Internally some of them are different, but I'm not so sure about functionally. As the same unit is used on many different cars, just labeled differently when their programmed.
Don't take this as gospel because I only have access to what I play with, and haven't tried doing this extensively on any other cars. I don't have the time or money to own several ECU's though I try to pick them up when I can.
I do understand what he's asking, which is having an ECU programmed for his daily driver map, and an ECU for his race map, makes sense if you have two static maps and don't want to rewrite the ECU frequently. It takes only a few minutes to swap an ECU at the track or for dealer service and it doesn't require a laptop to do it.
If he called Mitsubishi and asked about "reprogramming" their obviously aware that not only does it have to have the immobilizer resynched, but the ECU "matched" to the year of the vehicle.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY, you can download your entire map off your existing ECU, upload it to the new one, and they will be clones of eachother, you can then reprogram, butcher, mail, puke on, your spare ECU any time you want.
