Stock EVO CD player...???

I've noticed the first problem with my new (almost 5000 miles) EVO... not much of a problem but it has become somewhat annoying.

I think the hard suspension in the EVO has trashed my CD player in the stereo. Whenever I hit the brakes even mildly the CD will skip and "pop", and the noise from the actual player itself sounds out of balance, almost like the spinning CD might actually be striking something in the stereo. This happens pretty much EVERY time I hit the brakes (like stopping at a stoplight), and a decent bump in the road will also send the CD player into a "POP" and then silence for a moment till it recovers.

Just curious if anyone else has seen this. There is NO WAY I am going to take this back to the dealer for this, I REFUSE to hand my keys over to some 19 year old punk and say "Yeah, when I slam the brakes or hit bumps the CD player stops working"... I'm sure he'd be like "well, I betteer take it for a test drive then..." and I'd get the car back with 500 extra redlined miles on it.

I planned to replace the stereo anyway, I guess I'll just do it in the next few weeks rather than this fall like I planned

mine has NEVER skipped, and I drive on some pretty f'd up roads, including a lot off-road. so something definitely wrong with yours... no normal. It won't play burned cds, but that is even on a smooth road.. but it tells you that in the manual anyway....

are you playing original CDs or made up copies ?

i've no problems with CD player in my EVO but in my other car (Pajero/Montero) i have similar problem as you when going offroad. however it only happens with my backup copies, not originals.

you guys probably figured it out for me, these are my recently burned "favorites" CDs that are compilations of favorites onto just a few CDs.

I'll try some original CDs again (they DID work earlier) and confirm your suspiscions.... dang that sucks if it's true, hauling around like 50 CDs instead of just like 5 or 6 is going to SUCK. Plus there is the whole THEFT issue with original CDs, gonna have to leave the windows up all the time I guess and hid the dang CD cases someplace.

Oddly, the burned CDs worked fine for a couple of weeks now, this didn't start until a few days ago...

Thanks guys

My CD player never worked and ejected all CD's right from the day one. Finally I did take it to the dealership and getting it replaced today. As for the joy rides by the Mitsu techs, I do not mind them having some fun though I think it is highly unlikely even if I gave them permission. Sometimes we do not give them enough credit for their professionalism.

Mt stock dcek plays burned CDs.
CD skipping pretty common to CD players though esp over bumpy roads.
Dont worry about it.

Some newer CD recorders can record in a special "audio mastering" mode that (allegedly) improves the quality of audio disc burning.

Given that some of these recorders can be had for not much more than $50, it might be a better solution to invest in a new CD-R than to carry around original CD's.

SpikeLS1 - My CD has skipped on rough surfaces since I have had it. I think the head unit has very little error correction and any quick set of bumps will throw it off. I never listen to "burned" Cds, but I do notice that different cds seem more prone to the skipping than others.

A lot of it may have to do with road surfaces in the area you live in....like you I live in the St.Louis area and a lot of the roads are crappy to say the least!

Btw- were you on I-70 out in the St Peters and St. Charles area yesterday? I was cruising west on 70 form Midrivers drive and saw a white EVO cruising east on 70.

Interestingly this is the first EVO I have sighted on the road since buying mine almost 3 1/2 months ago!

Sorry, wasn't me, I was in South county all day yesterday at a Camaro and Firebird get together... the EVO was in the garage resting... :-(

But I also have seen the white EVO out there, he apparently works around Chesterfield and lives out in the St. Chuck area. I haven't found him online or seen him in person yet... I've discovered fellow EVO owners with a red one (we are on a local stlouis racing board together) and a blue one (chatted online with the owner on www.solo2.org) here in West County, and Friday I saw a black one on the road for the first time with aftermarket wheels and very dark tint on Olive road near 141.
Gave him a wave and got a big smile and a wave in return from him and his girlfriend.

We just need to find a silver owner here in the area and we'll have all the colors needed for an EVO8 photoshoot :-)

N10S have you done any mods yet?? I was listening watching the MPGs of the Buschur exaust over the weekend and I would really really like to order that - it sounds very healthy, but I'd like to hear it in person before spending the money. Do you know anyone locally that has swapped exausts or done any mods yet?

I just sent my ECU to Works today for the 93 octane re-flash if that counts. I should have it back in my car later this week (thus/fri).My car is still stock otherwise, but I do intend on upgrading the DP/exhaust and adding a forge recirc DV in the near future.

The Ultimate Racing exhaust, and Vishnu's signature level exhaust also seem pretty nice as well. RMR's exhaust is suppose to be a bit quieter than Buschurs, but it depends on what you are after I guess. Until you can hear one in person its hard to say for sure!
