speed density / maf
Speed density is a method of calculating air volume based on pressure and temperature. A MAF sensor calculates air volume based on air temp, barometric pressure and metered airflow either from a hotwire, flapper or karmann vortex generator.
The advantages of using a speed density setup is being able to use a VTA BOV, get rid of the MAF sensor that could be a restriction, be able to drive somewhat normally even with the I/C piping completely blown off. Your only options for converting to speed density include AEM EMS, MAFT Pro or a patched ECU in conjunction with a JDM MAP sensor.
A MAF setup is easier to work with and tune.
