Jerky shifts?

Hey everyone. I recently just baught an EVO 9 MR, and just had a couple of questions about something. Just regular driving its no as bad but, when i really get on it it seems alot worse. As im just crusing along going somewhere driving normal my shifts are good not bad jerkiness, but when i really get on it lets say from a dig or a roll and i shift the whole damn car is wicked jerky and shakes, i dont know what it is. My last car (Cobalt ss s/c) was smooth as could be, and also i drove an 05 STI for a couple of months and i didnt have this problem so im not sure what it is? I mean i could possibly blow at drving for all i know haha. But it didnt do it with my other cars. Any info would be nice, thanks!

It's probably cause you're new to the car and driving it hard, no matter what you do hard shifts will never be as smooth as soft shifts.

I test drove a cobalt SS s/c a while ago and I fouind that it was a lot slower to drop revs than the evo and had a more progressive (longer) throw to the clutch, try shifting a little faster in your day to day driving,
Also, the evo has a clutch designed for 270+ horse, the cobalts is designed for 210 however, when either engine is not making lots of power, they're very similar so the EVO's clutch is going to be grabby. (er) Keep at it.

Something you've probably noticed already is a loud thump coming from the back of the car during hard 1-2 shifts (though I heard it slightly during a 3-4 the other day ). Just to let you know, that's totally normal, though I'm pretty sure you should avoid it if you can. It's something to do with the rear diff case hitting something else because it has soft bushings, I think.

The clutch is a lot grabbier and the drivetrain has a lot of slop in it from the factory. Get the agp front motor mount (cheap) along with some diff mounts (works, beatrush, etc). That will reduce the problem a lot.

It's normal.
Mine did same thing til I got a little more used to how it shifts.
The more you drive it, the better it'll get.

I've found shifting firmly but slower helped me out in finding the way she likes it. lol, seriously though, It'll almost shift itself when you get it right.
Main thing is Practice, drive the car and you'll be fine.

Hardest one for me to get down was 1-2nd, seemed to jerk a little after I let off the clutch.
After awhile i learned to shift smoother.

Coming from a Lifted 5 spd Jeep to an evo is a bit of learning curve on shifting.
Still weird after i drive the jeep a few days then drive the evo.

you just need more practice
the evo is a raw sedan and will never shift as good as your other cars

your probably just not shifting good. If you push in the clutch to long and let the prm drop then let go of the clutch after flooring it raising the rpm it will do that.
you should practice getting the rpm shift correctly. it could be your shifting to early to. dont try to shift at 300 rpm, wait until 4000+

ive also noticed that under normal driving...if i hit a fairly good bump, my foot will move on and off the gas petel and the car starts to get jerky...
caused by awd

Same thing happened with me in the first few months. The evo clutch needs practice!

the bobble struts that go on the top side of the motor really help and won't have the vibration of motor mounts. my stillway one really helped.

a lot of the shifting problems under load occur because the transmission has moved from the time you took it out of gear and you have to find the new location to put it back into the next gear.

clutch takes practice, ive owned a 95 civic hatchback running on 2 1/2 cylinders for 4 years saving for my evo i purchased 3 months ago>> it does take practice, my best advise is to do what i did, enjoy the car as much as you can by driving it as much as you can, as commented before, practice shifting fast and smoothly with daily driving and slowly get more aggressive>> i wouldnt recommend banging gears like a FWD in an AWD, my understanding is that thump cant be good for rear diff, i might be wrong, all i know is after a few weeks you can get it to grab perfectly. what took me longer was 2stepping correctly. good luck on your route, wish i coulda got a niner
