Evo VIII NHTSA Import Petition Announced

A notice was published in today's Federal Register. See
http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-...d=fr30jn03-133

It is titled "Notice of Receipt of Petition for Decision That Nonconforming 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, Left Hand Drive Passenger Cars Are Eligible for Importation"

Of course, JDM Evo VIII's were manufactured as RHD and wouldn't become eligible for import, even if the above petition is approved.

P.S. The petition may be viewed at:
http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf86/246539_web.pdf

The petition is the first document included in the docket, which is conceptually like a file folder. The 2003 LHD Evo VIII docket may be viewed at:
http://dms.dot.gov/search/searchResu...berValue=15470

Euro-spec Evo8s are available in LHD, though, and are closer to JDM than US-spec cars are. The areas of non-compliance will probably add several thousand dollars to the cost of the car, so the imported 8s will end up being $40k plus cars.

FYI, this isn't from EI - it's from G&K Automotive Conversion, which appears to have been around for some time.

No evo VII

What would a hypothetical approval of the above petition mean for a subsequent petition on the Evo VII?
The "docket" is here. Currently, the only item in that docket is the petition itself. In a day or two, a copy of the Federal Register notice that was published today will be added. And, if any comments are received, then they, too, will be added to that docket.

Positive comments don't seem to have any effect but negative comments can substantially lengthen the process. An extreme example would be the failed petition for the 2000 Porsche 911 GT3 (its docket is here). Two negative comments were received during the 30-day comment period, one from Porsche Cars North America and one from "Anonymous." After the comment window closed, the petitioner was given an opportunity to respond to those comments. Then the two original comment-submitters were given an opportunity to respond to the petitioner's response. Then the petitioner was given an opportunity to respond to these new responses.

I would guess that approval of this petition would have little effect on an Evo VII petition. But rejection of this petition would be bad news, I think. If the petitioner couldn't demonstrate that a foreign Evo VIII is substantially similar to the US Evo, then what chance would he have in demonstrating that the Evo VII is subtantially similar to the US Evo?

Just a question: What would be the point of bringing in a JDM Evolution VIII, other than the fact that its LHD and the US one doesn't have that JDM-ness. I mean surely a JDM Evo 8 is going to cost more than a American Evo 8.

I think time/money would be better spent trying to get the Evolution 7 and 6 into the country for street use, not trying to bring something in that is essentially already here. Kind of redudant in my opinion because I thought the entire purpose of petitioning to bring a car in, is so you can have something thats not available.

Just my 2 cents

SAYC and ACD. The 8 is an all around more advanced car. Just a hunch, but I'd expect to see either an approved or rejected petition for the VII surface shortly too.

EDIT: Not to mention there is no substantially similar to the VI and both cars (VI and VII) are out of production now so their potential for sale (esp in the US) will only decline. Awful lot of work for diminishing sales.

I still want my ACD and front LSD.

The JDM gsr also have 6-speed and semi-auto climate control and 2 dins. And more narrow but larger boaster seats.

I hope these gizzmos will not let us down like the STi here. On paper the STi should kill the evo with DCCD and front LSD. Oh well.

I wonder whether Mitsubishi will produce ANY 2003 LHD Evo VIII's (other than for the US market).

This is a very strange petition. They're basically saying in the petition that a mythical car, the non-US 2003 LHD Evo VIII, is substantially similar to the US Evo. And, to back that assertion, they've included scans from the 2001 Evo VII service manuals.
