Console lights - on all the time?

Hey guys, the lights on my console (gauge cluster) went out a few weeks ago, so I can't see how fast I'm driving at night. I took it to the dealer to fix, and they charged me an exorbitant price. But I think they screwed up. The console lights are on ALL the time now, and the dimmer doesn't do anything. But when I flip my headlights on, my center console lights come on and the dimmer will work for everything. Then when I flip the headlights off, everything goes off except those console lights. It's not supposed to be like that right? It's been about a month since I've had lights at all, so I am doubting myself. I asked the dealer and he said thats "within spec," and when I argued, he said they might have to charge me to fix it again, wtf? This is Stevens Creek Mitsu in Santa Clara. Let me know about those lights, it's pissing me off how they messed up like that.

The lights are always lit on the gauge cluster. The switch you're talking about, which is next to the fog light button, is actually for headlight angling. Scroll it up and down and watch your headlights.

No, the headlight angling scroll switch is next to my gauge light dimmer switches. Maybe its diff for evo 9 than the original evo 8 ('03 model)

Are you sure the gauge cluster lights are always lit? I quite remember them being always off unless headlights = on. Second opinion?

I am pretty sure the gauge cluster was always light up with headlights off, and then when you had the headlights on you could dim or brighten in my old evo. I usually would notice when I drove through a tunnel.

Gauge cluster lights are on once you turn the ignition. Which is why the bulbs behind there go out often. That has been an every evo I have ever seen. The dimmer switch I think is normal too. Unless you turn on the headlights you cannot change the luminosity of the cluster.

On my Evo IX the gauge lights stay on all the time and can only be adjusted when the headlights are on.
