About 91 octane

Hey guys I'm looking to get an Evo in the next year or so, and I have a couple questions

I live in Norcal, and the highest gas offered is 91. I've heard that the evo runs best on 93, will this be a problem? I searched a bit and some say you get knock, but will this really be a problem in the long run?

Also, if I plan to tune the car and raise the boost a little, would it be advised to do so on 91? Will it ruin the car overtime?

Thanks

Leave it at stock boost until your tuner looks at your maps I was getting random knocks peak @ 22psi with 92 octane.

Is it practical and convenient to do that?
How many tanks does each bottle supply?

Bro... run it on 91 until you get tuned.

Then get tuned for 91.

Voila.

No it won't hurt the car over time. The reason it's dangerous to run a high-strung vehicle on ****-tane gasoline is that you run a higher probability of detonation. If you run 91 right now, you're fine. If you TUNE for 91, then you're even MORE fine.

How's that?

Uh, that was just a joke - don't do that. You do realize that half the country only gets 91, right? You didn't think that all Evos sold on the Western half of the country were running around worrying about raising their octane were you? The Evo is built to run 91oct.

Thanks man, answered every question I had and probably the ones I was going to have.

Warrtalon:
Actually I didn't know that.. lol. Thanks though? I just keep hearing the evo runs better on 93, blah. Thought I'd ask to make sure before I make my purchase.

The Evo is tuned to run 93 from the factory. But that's what the knock sensor is for, low octane timing and fuel maps, etc. The ECU just retards the timing a bit when it detects some knock.

Seems to me that most cars that 'require premium' are tuned for 93 octane. The 350Z for example will gain 5-10whp by switching from the crap 91 oct we get in Cali to some good 93 octane.

But, in short, the car will be fine. All manufacters have to make sure their cars will be safe on 91 octane. The ecu will safeguard the motor from destroying itself.

Also, if you read the owner's manual, it tells you specifically about a California purchased EVO. More specifically that California EVO's have a different catalytic converter, and are set to run perfectly fine on 91 octane gas, and actually to be careful if using a higher octane fuel or fuel from out of state as it may contain more sulphur and therefore damage your catalytic converter. For EVO's purchased outside of CA, it suggest 93 octane or better.

No, I don't have the manual with me atm, I'll update with the exact verbage later tonight.
