no one takes your question seriously. the sideimpact rating is deterring you from buying the car? than don't buy the car, because you obviously don't get it. the best you can do is get a full cage, and drive with a helmut, anything else you do is going to be pointless.

Did you read my post above? It was a joke.

I already explained that you may have been mislead by published "crash ratings."

Alright I guess, I will have to go somowhere else for a acurate answe. Are you basing this personal experience or factual data. Because this just sounds like opinons not logical answers. Thank you.

Considering that he got his car slammed in the driver's doors, I'd say he has some experience.

What are you looking for? Can you make the car safer? Sure, you can make any car safer...ask the owners of bulletproof Hummers.

For the Evo, you can cage it, if you like.

But you're still missing the point- most "crash ratings" I've seen for the Evo are based on the 02-04 lancers which have major structural differences from the Evo. You may be worrying about a phantom problem.

But even MORE to the point, people don't buy these cars for their Consumer Reports rating...it's an unreal representation of the car's potential and draw... most of us don't care if it's loud, or ugly, or has bad fuel economy...and those that do mod to fix what they don't like...

neither, i have an engineering degree. but if you want to hire me, i can design side impact reinforcements, and test them. you just have to pay me a salary+benefits, plus the Evos i will crash, and the facilities+materials to test them.

or you can pay somebody at a metal shop to fab you some door reinforcements, and hope the reinforcements don't crush or impale you in a side impact. theres always that option.

I got hit in the drivers side by a truck only going 20 mph and I was sore the next day. My door looked like he was doing 50 mph

Exactly. You can't just cook up crash safety improvements in some garage.

As an engineer this thread hurts my brain. You act like the Evo is made of paper and is a death trap. It is not, even regarding side impact ratings.

One thing to remember, lacking side impact airbags results in an at-best rating of four stars. Then consider the unibody structure the Lancer/Evo has was designed in the late 1990's to meet the standards of that time period. The fact it passed all the way up to 2006 is impressive.

Seriously, if this is a hang up the only way around it feasibly is to have a cage installed. Again though, do you really have a firm grasp on what is or isn't safe???

I guess, I am just concerend for my safety as well as my passengers safety. I love the evo. I just dont want an unsafe car. Do you think the evo is a safe car to own. Now im not talking about the power, or the ability to over drive the car and crash. But the ability of the body of the evo to take a hit. What do you think. I am not puting a cage in my dd, so that is not a option. Let me know what you think. Your an egnineer, sound like a smart guy. Whats your take on this.

NO the Evo is not a very safe car. But that is not the reason people buy it. You dont see very many evos with child seats in them. jm2cents

I feel its a very safe car in general. Side impact wise, it could be better, but we are talking marginal differences up to the best same-year vehicle WITHOUT side airbags.

If safety is truly a sticking point, you might want to look elsewhere for a vehicle. Remember though the safest car in the world will not prevent injury in very bad situations, and I personally feel the Evo is more than well equiped for dealing with impacts. Of course I drive an Acura Integra built in 1995 daily, which I'm more than sure based on todays side crash tests would be awarded zero stars.
