Motec is the best!

Simply: it's a full standalone computer and allows you to control fuel and spark fully. It is considered the electronic "brains" of the engine much as cams are the mechanical "brains". It's expensive because it is the best and used in professional race environments where money is no object.

Your stock ECU can be programmed to do much of what something like a Motec can do. There are also many other standalone ECUs out there that perform similarly but ultimately motec will have the most robust hardware, support, and features etc. Its been around a while and thus has gained the reputation and cost associated with that.

You can get by with a "lesser" Motec. The M4 is a good entry level one for example. Or just reflash the stock ECU and call it a day. A system like a Motec can be swapped from car to car so your investment is not lost...
