thanks to you that did answer without being a smart a$$ .car is not rich at all .i did put all the mods on car the car was stock when i bought it.it only had 6 miles on it. i will be the first one to tell you i don't know $hit about a evo.so if my questions are stupid then don't answer them.

It's called over run, it happens when the engine goes into vacuum suddenly(like during a shift). It' sucks fuel through system and it comes out of the pipe as a fire ball. On carburated engines it draws fuel through the idle control circuit. I'm not sure where it draws the fuel from on fuel injected motors but, ti's the same idea.
Look at every form of major auto racing and you will most likely see a fireball come out the exhaust when they lift off the gas. I guess they are all running pig rich and loosing mad power as well.
That is assuming it isn't just shooting a stream of flame out of the pipe at WOT. Then I don't know what to tell you.

My guess is you have no cat and you're running a little rich at times. Basically that equates to the occasional flame thrower as unburned gas is exploding in the exhaust piping.
