UPDATE - Can any of you guys tell me what this is

http://s127.photobucket.com/albums/p...5102007008.flv

That sound comes up while the turbo is spooling up. This is all the info I have right now for you, anything else please ask:

Car: 2006 Evo IX with almost 5,000 kms

Mods: aftermarket Downpipe, O2 housing and header. Injen CAI with Lower and upper IC piping. Tuned by Mellon

Problem: After getting all the parts installed and the tune by Mellon tuning (by the way it's highly recommended) I noticed that the boost pressure was not getting to 19 psi, it was peaking to ~17psi and holding ~15psi. I decided to make a boost leak test and found some very small leaks, but still the boost was not 19 psi.

So I decided to install the OEM exhaust manifold. Right after doing this I went out to test the boost level and since then I'm getting this noise.

I then performed another boost leak test and have not found anything obvious yet. There are no apparent leaks in the hot side circuit of the turbo either, or I just don't know how to find it. There are no oil traces neither in the intake nor outside part of the cold turbo circuit.

The noise also comes up while not moving, in neutral but at a higher RPM, which is telling that the problem is related to the turbo

Please let me know what you guys think and point me in a direction to solve this problem. This is driving me crazy.

My '92 DSM at one point had lifters so bad the noise would cause the ECU to pull all timing and then the turbo would make a sound like this.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't think the t-case is the problem, as it's also making the noise while stopped, in neutral.

The turbo might be the problem, but I don't see any oil leaking from it. It doesn't have any axial play whatsoever either.

The vid was made short to show the noise while accelerating, and that was first gear. As I shift gears, the noise is worse and worse and almost no boost.

Do another boost leak test. Mine made this same noise and wasnt holding boost and ended up being the clamp holding the turbo to the hotside's bolt broke off and was loose. Did it another time and was the lower intercooler pipe. Havent heard any noise since!

When you do the boost leak test wiggle all your piping. I had a leak and couldnt find it until i wiggles the piping. Also try doing the pull in 3rd gear so it is a little longer video.

One of them "woo-woo" exhaust mods? j/k

It sounds like the turbo is letting you know it is time to upgrade.

It ended up being the turbo, as some of you said. Good thing is that I have a FP Green in the way, so I guess it not bad at all. Sorry about the crappy picture, but you cannot expect anything better than that from a cell phone

You can see in the picture that the turbine wheel is very scrapped, and there are actually two blades whose tips broke off. I don't know what could have caused this. Maybe something got in there while installing the header? I have not abused the car, so I don't know what could have been the cause of this

Send that turbo to blouch and have a failure analysis done to it IMO. Also, inspect, check, or replace all of the oil lines to and from the turbo. Change your oil and also send the oil filter to blouch turbo IMO.

Call them at 717-865-3276 and ask for Bob or Mike.
