Best performance modifications without changing the exhaust?

Hey guys,

Looking to buy another Evo. I need to keep a stock exhaust on it, however I want to do the most power enhancing modifications I can. What do you guys recommend, and how much power do you think I can obtain without changing the exhaust?

Exhaust laws in Massachusetts are insane..

You should do an exhaust cut out then.

it is hard with only one mods. but if you have more option then: i would do, besides the ecuflash, boost controller , intake, hotside or the hotside is not acceptable then cams. 264's. maybe the cams will give you some gain. but i think it would be hard to push over 300 whp if its not impossible... but look the bright side, maybe the torque will be high. oh and defenietly Sean Ivey for the tune.

Tune it. If you're willing to modify some of the exhaust, then go with a 3" DP and HF cat - yes, it seems to go against logic, but it does improve flow, without adding too much noise. Otherwise just stick with the tune.

PM the guys at WORKS. They may have the perfect muffler for you. I haven't heard it, but check out the description...might be the perfect fit for you.

Are you looking to keep the sound level down or keep emissions down? If its emissions, then just swap the exhaust before the test every year.

yours is an 03 Evo? Things I would do:

1. get the 10.5 hotside or 05 Evo turbo, or Evo IX turbo.
2. get the stock manifold ported and Swain Tech coated. A company called PPI (I think) does this. If the porting doesn't completely smooth out the runners, get it Extude Honed.
3. drop-in filter.
4. a high quality O2 housing.
5. I would still recommend getting a downpipe. I just installed a Works 76mm on my Evo and it's exactly as quiet as stock.

Why do you suggest a high quality O2 housing? Arent they pretty much all the same?

I call this my project stealth, I wanted it quiet but quick. Its hard to tell this car has been modified but once you get on its a beast!

mods: ebay 02 housing, 3" downpipe and testpipe mated to stock cat back, panel filter, Forge MBC, GSC 272 exhaust cam, AMS licp, 100 octane with AMS Flash dyno'd at 321 whp and 358 ft lbs

I ran the stock exhaust for awhile with other mods. I had HKS 272's, fuel pump, mbc at 21psi, and a flash. The car went from 212hp to 261hp on a DynoDynamics dyno. I finally went with a downpipe, catback, and Ecuflash and made 287hp. Keeping the cat still made it extremely quiet and wasn't worth the extra power for me.

I have a full turbo back with a greddy sp2 exhaust. Sounds like stock under 3500 rpm but once you get past that it has a meaty tone. I live in OC ca so you should have no problems.

Great Ideas guys.
I'm not worried about the sound - it can be loud as I want, just can't change the muffler/exhaust. They drive around here giving you a ticket for modified exhausts. It could be a replica, but if its not fom the factory - illegal. No way of getting around it.

I'll definitely do a tune, and probably an alky kit. Base mods like intake are a definite. I'll look into the other options you guys mentioned

Thanks!
