Why are EVOs so heavy?

Isn't Lancer EVO basically a heavily modified Lancer???
A quick look up on specs... regular Lancer OZ is 2701 lbs...
Lancer EVO w/o the sunroof is 3263 lbs...

Just wondering what could add a hefty 562 lbs to the car...

Engines are same displacement at 2.0 (with EVO's having lightweight but stronger parts)
Turbo and all the plumbings
Intercooler
Intercooler sprayer parts
Chassis welds
4WD system (center/rear differential)
Heavier wheels & Tires
Much bigger brakes/rotors
HID ballasts....
Slightly bigger car with all the fender flares...
EVO having lighter weight seats (Recaros)
EVO having lighter hood/door/trunk??
EVO having thiner lighter rear glass
EVO having bigger/heavier exhaust?

Anyone else want to add?

Looks more like the title should read: "Why EVOs are so much heavier than Lancers."

You summed up just about everything in your list. The trunk is no different and offers no weight savings. Aside from the thinner glass, not much is different in the interior weight-wise.

The AWD system is incredibly heavy. Try lifting a propshaft and see how easy it is. If you've ever picked up a turbo of this size, its gotta weigh at least 10 pounds.

The increased rigidity with all the extra welds adds quite a bit of weight as well. I think it's something like over 200 additional welds.

I thought EVO's turbo could be bigger right?
Isn't it the same 16G mitsu turbo found on SRT-4's as well?

Still weights a lot, I guess.

The Evolution's turbo could certainly be bigger, but it is by no means the smallest turbo ever used, either.

Don't forget the added suspension components, and the brembo calipers and discs, the discs are way bigger than the normal lancer's.

I'll try to find it again, but the Evo has always been like the Honda Integra Type R, in that they are not the same unit-body as their siblings... they use thicker material in the body at the suspension points and across the rear tub connecting both shock towers. In the Honda it was a few mils thicker, which is a lot. Seems like the Evo was a couple mils thicker too, but this old man can't remember how much... I found it researching Evo's and Evo Extremes on European sites. It was also in some of Mitsubishi's Japanese text. They were talking about the huge increase in rigidity of the VII vs. the Evo VI and sited the reasons why... including a small snip vs. the stock Lancer.

I remember reading that too, except that it was 200 welds per door. Realistically, they probably just halved the weld spacing for everything in the car. Twice the welds and a ton of rigidity, but yes also a little more weight.
