Cutting the bumper????

What do you suggest to use on cutting the bumper? I want to cut the part that will show my intercooler pipe? Similar to AMS drag car! I wanna ask some advise before I try it....

Thanks for any input?

I think its for easy access to the clamp and cooling purpose. I maybe wrong though.... Its just PITA when you blew up lower ic pipe on either side.

you should face your clamps so that they can be accessible from underneath the car (assuming you have no undertray)

AMS has a "race" fmic that requires cutting the bumper because of the pipes...they don't just do it because it looks cool...the routing of the piping makes it necessary

a regular intercooler will just look stupid because there would be a huge gap

I would just use a dremel to do my finer cutting

^^exactly. There's always a functional purpose with the "real" race cars. If you're going to do that for the look only, you might as well get a atmospheric dumping BOV for the sound.

But you're right...that AMS' shop car photo looks pretty awesome! I love that car.

If someone was to do it, I wouldn't try and do it myself. You know how difficult it would be to get a good looking cut?? And one that would be symmetrical on both sides?? If you are in fact interested, i would go to a reputable body shop and get a quote.

Well I have an AMS race core and the only reason you have to cut for the pipes is cause they are just too big to be routed behind the bumper. As for Just cutting to show you pipes why would yo uwant to do it? raw aluminum and ugly coplers= disgusting!

draw what your going to cut with a dry erase marker until you get it right. take your bumper off put it on a bench and cut it with a dremel up to the marks you made but leave a 1/16. then get a barrel sander for a screw gun and sand to the marks nicey nice. thats just my 2cents

When I cut bumpers up I

-mark it out
-cut large part with tin slips
-get hard to reach areas with dremel (used sparingly)
-work way down 3 files to get right shape/smoothness

I also make sure that when I file it I do it on an angle to remove more of the plastic on the bumper (inside) that the paint (outside)

But...

if you are doing this without the race core it will look stupid because its not going to pop out like that

BR Race core with larger pipes.

Picks aren't perfect but my cutting is pretty darn nice. Dremel tool with the sanding piece. I just eyed where the pipe was tight and cut each side slowly.

I used the back of a match and touch up paint to make it look finished where my cut marks were. Most people that see this ask me what shop cut and painted it.
