Driving on ice *observations*
ACD wont help you in a straight line, around turns yes. No matter what setting I have my acd set to it still kicks out if i hit the gas too much. Just drive slower and dont obruptly give it gas
If you hit the gas too much on snow with snow tires and the ACD on ANY setting, it will still kick out. The ACD doesn't have a "psycho filter" built in to it.

EDIT - To clarify about the ACD: It doesn't split torque to the front wheels more when in SNOW mode. The center diff stays 50/50 split regardless of modes. It holds the center differential locked longer, resulting in less wheel spin (unless all 4 wheels have no traction, then you'll just spin all 4 regardless). I guess the torque steer that I was feeling was from one of the front two tires gripping a bit sooner after spinning?

I drive quite a bit on ice/snow and I don't really notice the snow mode in a straight line. I definetly notice it with steering input- the front pulls where you point it. Its also harder to kick the rear end out in snow mode, yet very controllable.
I have never experienced the rear walking unless there was throttle or brake input.

Just be really careful over any suspended road. The temperature of the road surface on a bridge or suspended road is much colder than that of a road on the earths surface. That leads to easier ice formation.
Mine can sometimes kick out on dry pavement if I get on it hard enough. It's ice and you're in a car...what did you expect? Just go easy on it like others have said and you won't end up in a ditch.
