Finally getting an evo

Well, I can finally start seriously looking for an evo! In a month or two my credit history will be long enough to be approved for around 25k w/ out a co-signer. Now I have a few questions as I am very new to the EVO side of things (grew up with 1 & 2g DSM's) is it worth the few extra thousand to get IX? or should I look for a low mileage IIIV MR? Also, whether I get a IIIV or IX, what is the max boost I can run on a 100% stock motor and fuel system? Thanks.

VIII:
- 9.8 hotside (affects spool)
- No variable valve timing
- different turbo size (?)
- Makes about 230 on a dynojet stock
- Cheap leaky plastic DV

IX:
- 10.5 hotside
- MIVEC Intake cam VVT
- larger turbo
- Makes about 260 on a dynojet stock
- Not as responsive to cam upgrades as the VIII
- Metal DV

The VIII is the USDM classic, but the IX has gotten a lot of attention for how well it takes to mods. Just a TBE, MBC, tune results well over 300 WHP on the IX, but the VIII makes huge gains over the IX with cams. The 03 VIIIs had a P0300 code (misfire) issue also. Just something to be aware of.

I'm familar with both and unless you've driven both, you won't be able to tell a HUGE difference in power. You can mod a VIII to be faster than a IX with the money you saved by not buying a IX.

Ohh and as for boost...I might be off a little but it is my understanding:

VIII 19-20 PSI
IX: 21-23 PSI

Thanks alot for the info. I was leaning towards a VIII since they are easier to find, and you can get one with like 20k miles for around 20k, where as a IX with similar mileage hangs in the upper 24k range. One more thing... whats a DV?

DV=diverter valve AKA Blow off valve. However one correction about Evo VIII's...2005 models have a 10.5 hotside

well hope you could find a new Evo. It just feels weird that it's tuned to someones elses preferneces besides your own. Besides I think a stock evo would be the best to start out with right? ;D Good luck on finding an evo took me awhile fore i got my beauty

I would love a 9 but I dont think I can afford around 28k for one with low miles as of now. If I save for a few months and put around 5k down then perhaps. If I do get a 8 it will be a stock 2005 with 35k miles or less. I can not wait. Thanks for all the input, this forum is alot more active then my mr2 forum lol.

8 for track star.
9 for street warrior.

If 9, get a 5 spd SE.

I think you would be happier with a IX but it is your choice on what you get.Good luck!

some of these facts are not accurate...just a heads up to the OP

in my personal opinion...

get an earlier model viii if you plan on going with an aftermarket turbo etc etc

get a late model viii or a ix if you plan on staying stock turbo

avoid the MR if you plan on dragging or road racing
