Its just a plain and simple fact, if you beat the crap out of it, something is going to break. Like Stvbreal said, its possible to drive it hard and not damage it. Most of the guys with clutch problems under 4k miles were probably beating the crap out of it.
But some people have had legitament problems and they were taken care of.
What color would you get?

That's a sweet BMW in the background, but who's looking anyways.
You realy can't tell how dirty is is in pictures. Looka at my car with Jamies when he stopped by. Mine was filthy and his was gleaming. Caint tell.
Jamies is the one behind mine. Off topic here, but what the hell.

1600 miles so far, no goofyness.
Coming from a Subaru the build quality is better, and by that time the Sube already had rattles.
With VERY sticky Advans Mitsu did the right thing in putting in a clutch to act as fuse - Something MUST give when launching, I'd rather it be my clutch. If I rev too high (like past 5000) and try to think about slipping the clutch all I do is end up slipping and burning because it wont grab solidly till next gear. This car does not bog nearly as bad as the WRX off the line so you can at least get fairly decent launchings without abusing. I did nail the launch once against an E46 M3 Conv - blew his doors off, but for now I cannot remember exactly how I did it.
Despite the triple syncros I've found I MUST blip/rev match the throttle when downshifting into 2nd or 1st at anything but a crawl. Not a big deal....WORLDS better than the WRX tranny even with OEM short shifter, but then again I ALWAYS rev match when downshifting and I use the clutch very slightly to take up some of the stress on the drivetrain when engaging. You can feel if you did it correctly or not because you won't feel it - the gear shift. No disturbance to the weight balance of the car.
Another thing needed about this car is to treat the throttle like its got an egg on it. Be gentle and smooth when letting up so you don't jerk the hell out of the transmission. There are already stiff mounts to give better input and feeling, but at the same time you have to chill doing Turkey Jerks. AWD is not easy to drive smoothly, but if you spend the time with it I think it's more rewarding than most vehicles.
As for "warping" brake rotors I highly doubt the disk is deflecting in shape. Stoptech has a good article on the difference between "warping" and build up of deposits on the rotors because of overheating the pads or poor bedding procedures. There's a good reason why the factory tells you to take it easy on the brakes for a bit - unless you've had experience with performance pads then you can bed them right away. I think people are also freaking out that when cold these pads are not as grabby as the econo ones, a few good stops are required to get these puppys up to temp and really throw out the anchor. Once the pads are screwed up they will get worse and leave more crap on the rotors - causing the famous brake shimmy/jiggle/vibration, etc. Turning the rotors is only a temp fix until the driver is educated and pads replaced. These are exotic class brakes (with Advans on) and could handle extreme street/med track use all day long if used correctly.

i would get blue black or silver...u guys post ur pix if u want....just 2 help me decide on a color...i live in south fla so black is a pain in the *** with the rain...but i think its worth it...anyways i wanna know how high maitenance is the evo? i mean, by the time i get my evo ill be in college....so i wanna know how much of a pain it "might" or could be...? will i be stuck all the time checking everything in the car makin sure everythin is workin right...i know a high performance car is like this, but im just makin sure i know wut im gettin into when i buy this car...thanx
Being that I'm almost in the same predicament as you, I'll give you what I've made of this car. As far as color, silver should be your choice if you're going to college. When in college, you'll have a lot on your plate than just maintaining your car, and black calls for ALL of your attention. Trust me, I'm in college and my first year left me with no time to clean my car. I cleaned it only once (Although if it were an EVO I would of cleaned it a whole lot more!!!) But as you can see in the pictures above, dirt doesn't show on silver EVOs, so that's a good color choice.
Other than that, regardless what bad reports I hear, once I get my money up, I'm gonna purchase this car. I HAVE TO OWN IT!!! You're really lucky that you're gettin' a brand new car straight outta high school. Trust, you'll wanna get a silver one so you don't have to wash it everytime you leave your dorm (or apt.) The females don't care what you have... as long as it's clean!!!
That's my .02 cents.

I remember when Honda didnt warranty S2000 engines that blew, Mitsu isnt a good company...really it isnt.... but other than the STi (pricey, plus I didnt like the looks)and the G35 coupe...(which is rwd and a bit more $)....there is no alternatives...plus c'mon
SCC COVER....EVO vs 911 ....its a sweet thing

yeah i kno..i just picked up that mag 2 days ago...its nice... another thing that really caught my attention was when i was reading on usdmtsti.com, lots of wrx, and sti owners have had cracks on their windshields, i guess that subaru makes ****ty glass?? lol it seemed like how we problems with scratches or carpet(minor problems), their windshields are cracking literally! anyways, what does pinging mean? everywhere i read it says, if u want the evo, ull have tranny problems, if u have an sti, ull get pinging...what does that mean?.......soooo, yes i like the silver, but like some1 on here said, at night, black is liquid sex man....its so sweet, ill see wat happens..ne1 on here postin own a black one? if so post sum pix..thanx
of course the evo is worth it its the damn best car u can buy for under 50 IMO.... the problems (clutch...clunks on switchin every once in a while..minor rattling) **** like that may bother u but the performance will make up for it... as for the MITSU service yes they are def not the best and at times will extremly **** u of but hey wat can u do about it.... so my oponion is **** the dealership and just MOD THE CAR TO HELL!
u gonna come back and tell us that when the engine or tranny blows because it was defective? come on man make some sense. like it or not u need a dealer if u want warranty repairs, and i dont think u would wanna pay for it out of pocket b/c of mitsus mistake. therefore u need a dealer, so u cant say **** em.
Look at it this way, if you are going to mod your car you better have some extra money to fall back on for repiars cause 9 times outta 10 dealer is not going to honor warranty work if the car is moded.
Well, let us start with the basics. Us consumers want to save money. Them the dealers (including salespeople) want to make money. The car has a FIXED dealer invoice/MSRP. What you make is what they lose, what they make is what you lose. From the moment you walk into the dealership, the former tries to screw the latter for more money, or vice versa. Someone want to ***k someone else a little bit faster and a little bit deeper. So, my fellow EVO owners and car buyers in general, there is just no going around the issue. Too bad not a lot of dealers that have a fixed price on their cars sell EVOs, and if they do, they'll try to "service the account" with a trade in.
(Thanks for the servicing the account line from George Carlin).
As far as warrantee issues/service, anyone knows that there is too much BS in this country that we all love and adore, so each and every complaint will be dealt accordingly. Nobody wants to work on something if they do not necessarily know what exactly happened o a car. And they know that each car that goes into production, specially a lineup of EVOs I-VIII, they know that the cars components have been tested and proven to work.
I do admit that a lot of car dealers do not know a lot of things about the cars they sell sometimes, but they do know they have gone thru extensive R&D.

Well you dish out 30k. tax, interest, blah blah blah. What you end up with is a beautiful car. It has problems. Clutch mainly. I have had one blow. Mitsu covered it but I guess they aren't going to cover any more for anyone. Oh well. A racing clutch and labor aren't going to tear off an arm and a leg. I know that in another 10k or probably less now that I drive it even harder it's gone. It doesn't affect my feeling about the car. It is awesome. Drop 5k into it and you have close to an unbeatable car. The good thing is that the problems are small problems easily fixed. Go to another car's forum and you'll hear the same thing but people complaining about a lesser car. Small problems easily fixed.
