If you run 87 octane your timing will be pulled back to reduce knock, and itll run like crap because of the timing. If your car isnt stock ie higher boost pressure, bigger turbo, the cars ecu ability to control the knock may not be enough and then you can blow your engine up. 87 is not a good idea, but 91 is only 4 points higher. If you ran 87 all of the time your ecu would learn the characteristics and drive decent, would be slower due to reduced timing.

Keep in mind the timing retard is reactive, meaning it's already knocking for it to pull timing. It does keep a long term trim with the octane flag. But when it's not knocking it will bring the octane flag back up until it knocks again.

I bet it would still be tunable hell i'm running 24psi spikes on 91 octane here.
You are correct. Senator Ted Stevens I think he pass a bill or something stating that Gas companies here are no longer required to carry anything above 90 octane. 92 octane left us in August 2004. Some have resulted to Torco blend into 90 octane. I on the other hand mix 104 unleaded into 90 to get a little over 91 octane. Sucks that we in Alaska get charged for supreme prices for lower grade octane

higher octane fuel is not dirtier than regular fuel, all 3 grades are pretty much in cleaness. higher octane fuel burns cooler therefore reduce knock, NOT B/C IT'S Dirty.

Of course it matters, turbo car produce so much heat therefore it requires high octane fuel to reduce knock, like I said before, high octane fuel burns cooler therefore reduce knock.

If you got Ecuflash capability I bet you could tune that car to accept the 90 octane pretty well. I bet with the map I'm using right now you could run 20psi safely all day with 90 octane instead of the 22psi I'm using right now with the 24psi spike.

Tell your mechanic if you put 87 octane in, the ECU probably won't be able to pull back timing enough. Then it's "Pop goes the weasel goes the weasel goes pop."

Awhile back, this happened to a guy in New Jersey. An attendant put in 87 by mistake. Kid got on an on-ramp. Hit the gas. Kablooie!!!

Your buddies' mechanic is a hero

Thankfully, we have 93 octane here in Tennessee.
