Bad Valve Seal? Low Efficiency
Bad Valve Seal? Low Efficiency
My car seems to be less efficient then most at first I thought my stock clutch could not hold the power so I upgraded.... It seems that it has to be pushed harder and harder with more boost and tuning and still doesn't totally produce the numbers I expected. I have finally come to the conclusion that there may actually be something wrong with it. From many logs the main concern is the 2byte load goes up now in the (300-310) as I turn up the boost but the power stays exactly the same. Yes all fuel and timing changes have been made to reflect the higher boost. The only time the power goes up is in cold weather. 380-390whp in warm weather and 420-430whp in cold weather. So basically the car is moving more air and creating the same amount of power. My first thought is bad valve seals as I have seen white smoking streaming from the tail pipe after a 3rd to 4th pull on decel. Compression was 150's across the board so nothing funky there. Would a leak down test show bad valve seals? Also what does this cost and what is involved in replacing them. I am looking to get new cams since the hks 272's don't seem to be big enough for the 35R.
On decel is when the engine is in vacuum which would cause oil consumption if you had bad valve guide seals. That would also be blue smoke not white. I would still do a leak down just to rule valves in general out. (seals, guides, valves).
Would that cause a fair amount of power loss? My tuner and I have spent a good amount of time and this car just won't make the numbers. That is now why I am searching for WTF is going on with it! lol

a bad valve seal just means the barrings arent holding the oil when you shut your car off because thats all they do.. when you take them out if they are hard as a rock then you need to replace them there just like o rings on pistons theyre cheap but do the job when they break they need to be replaced right away

Valve seals have little to do with power. Do a leak down, to make sure your valves are seating and sealing in your head. One time my car (older civic) felt like it got slower, I took the intake tube off to find a plastic piece of the filter lodged in the throttlebody restricting air but not interfering with the throttle plate!
Um it's a 35R.
I am hardly even in it's efficiency range sometimes 26+ psi. The turbo is new.... but it never really made the power I was looking for. I don't think it is the turbo. Boost is good, spool is good, and it doesn't make any odd sounds. I know the HKS 272's cams have to go.

Valve seals would leak and cause a blueish white smoke. Where it would lose power is you are now getting oil into the combustion chamber which causes knock. If the ecu is picking up the knock and retarding the timing thats how you are loosing power.
Just FYI

Wht smoke is water--likely a head gasket. Could be blown between cylinders or from a water passage to a cylinder..That would answer your question and be the likely problem causing performance issues and accounting for the smoke.. Valve seals would be blue smoke as mentioned above. M

I am looking hard at the S2's.
