Make shift Double Din?

I found a 2din accent panel on Japanparts.com. It appears to be a place for an aftermarket head unit with a spacer attached above. I can't figure out why they would have added a spacer in that particular spot and was wondering if any of you thought it would be possible to cut the spacer out and make a make-shift double din of my own out of it. If so, how exactly would be the best way to go about this?

Picture (sorry they are so small, the site didn't provide any of good size):

that's the jdm radio panel. i have the same one. the spacer doesn't come with it so all you get is the double din panel.
