Evo III - What to look for..
Evo III - What to look for..
Hey..
At first, this is my first post here, so if itīs in the wrong section, let me know and i will make up for it.
Iīm on the lookouts for a 1995 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III, and as a daily Mitsubishi driver, i know the general faults/errors, but the evo is a bit different to my 1995 Colt/Mirage 1.8 GTi
I know that Mitsubishi in general have problems with the transmission, the manual gearbox for the most part. Are they also weak on the Evo? Iīm thinking both the syncros and bearings. And how does the transmission respond to performance increase? The car is a huge investment for me due to silly taxes, so iīm thinking about 350-400hp, or what ever is possible without opening the engine.
But other than that, are there anything else i need to look out for? Iīve heard about rust in the roof, due to some glue, but i donīt know if itīs true.
Thanks

You're looking for trouble trying to get 350-400 hp out of such an old engine. It will blow and your bank account will be drained.
Old engine, Old transmission, Old turbo, Old everything...
Unless you have some money to burn I would stay away from purchasing such an old Mitsubishi.
If budget is anywhere in your mind forget it.

To a certain degree I agree with Bryans2k.
They do have roof rust problems. Check the roof of any car you look at. If it looks off in any way chances are it has a rood rust problem.
As for the engine, you will probably need an engine rebuild depending on the age of the motor so expect to do a refresher there if you can find a good one to buy.
If you only have money to buy and drive then do just that until you can afford to upgrade. Turning up the boost on an old motor is a recipe for disaster.
As for the gear box, take a test drive in the you want to buy if you can. If the synchros are good you will have no trouble finding gears. Any scratching noises as you shift and you know the gear box might need some attention. As far as I know the standard gear box is good for the HP level you are looking at. THE RS models supposedly had stronger gearboxes.
Last but not least, hardly anyone on this board knows anything about these cars since they were not sold in the US.
I'll PM you a website.

Thanks for your replies, not what i hoped for though hehe.
Anyway, the car iīm looking for seems to be in great shape, and has only covered around 60-70.000 miles, and i donīt consider that old
I am on a budget, however the car would not be my daily ride, its only going to be driven when the sun is shining in the summer, so around 4-5.000 miles a year is proberly going to be it.
The rust in the roof, and the gearbox is actually my main concerns, as i canīt do the rust myself, and there are no aftermarket parts, or second hand gearboxes laying around.
I am a mechanic myself, so i can do all the work myself, except the rust
But i will try seeking info on other forums
Thanks..

Hate to revive an old post but curious to know if the person purchased one. I'm an owner and have been around them for a while i could answer some of the questions.
Sychros do have issues... But most Evo III's are 100KM plus..
Engines are very solid.. and yes the roof does have issues mine personally is rusting and i will have to treat it.
EvoIII's are true machines though with the right maintenance they will go!
... if your ever in Cayman Islands you can see 5-10 per day
