modifying trunk welding new panel?

i stripped out my trunk today, and you know the area that the spare used to be? well, i want to cut that entire section out (can i do that?) and then weld a flat panel over top of the hole. has anyone done this? can this be done easily? is it as easy as im making it sound?

Why? It wouldn't save much weight IMO...it sounds like a lot of work for little reward.

I wouldn't cut into the chassis. You're risking stability and chassis integrity to shave a couple pounds. Its kind of like saying "I'm fat, so I'll cut off my leg to lose 50 pounds." IMO, just go and do some "excersize".

If you're trying to shave weight, might as well take it off from somewhere else, by getting lighter rims , taking out convienences in the Evo like A/C whatnot, small things add up.

my question has almost been answered, i would want weight reduction from this, a formed piece of aluminum is going to weigh much more than say a flat piece of metal, i would only be cutting the circulat donut indent out.
