I would think he would be OK with a gap around .24 to .26. With those mods on an 8 I don't think he would need to be any tighter than that.

keep tightening the gap until you dont get backfire...if youre gap is down to .022 and you still have it....chances are its not the plugs

I would say look at the where the boost cut is set. You get a similar result when you hit it
