Mitsu VIN breakdown
i did a search and couldn't find it, so sorry if its a repost but here is the breakdown for 2003 Evos

Goes like this
Letter=category - Meaning of letter
j=Country - japan
a=make - MMC, MMMA
3=vehicle type - Passenger Car
a=Other - Driver & pass. air bags
h8=Car line & series - Lancer Evolution
6=type - 4 dr sedan (lancer, galant)
f=Engine - 2.0L DOHC Turbo (4g63)
9=Check digit
3=model year (3=2003)
u=assembly plant - mizushima
last six are plant sequence numbers

they have the lancer evo listed as a 2004 model but the engine only shows 4g63 as DOHC 2.0L

Here is how to decode plant sequence numbers:
