I spend a bit of time every day flagging scams like this on craigslist. Its sad, but too many people want so badly for their dream to come true, that they are willing to suspend common sense.
Recently, for grins I sent an e-mail asking for more info an a new M3 sedan for $20 less then it should be for sale for. The vehicle was supposedly in my area. As soon as I told him I was close by he told me he had just moved to South Dakota and that he was an Air Force LT Colonel for "the office of special investigation." I laughed so hard. I responded by telling him that I am in the Army and I work for the office of criminal investigations (really, I'm Army Finance) and that I would happily fly to SD on a space A plane trip to look at it. Needless to say, no response.

Ya I've come across a few of these on autotrader. I remember I was trying to look for an rx-7 for my brother in law and came across a flawless 93 twin turbo I think. Price was $2500 hahaha. First thing I did was call autotrader to report it. These people are getting better though, because the way they describe it makes you think that they know the car pretty well.
I have confronted two scammers about the sale of Evos on autotrader. This was when I was in the market for an Evo and looking all over. The first showed they were close by(Missouri), but the plates on the Evo and the background was Florida. I contacted and he said he just moved to Canada, gave me a VIN to something else completely as well. Within a week of reporting it the car was off the site. The phone number given was Florida as well.
The next was a lime green Evo with a black/carbon hood. Not my favorite choice of color but still looked nice. The pics showed a license plate plastic ring that said the name of a car lot. This Evo was said to be in Indiana, the car lot was in Illinois and still showed the car but stated it was sold. I contacted the seller he said he just moved to Iowa. The phone number he gave was from Texas. He said the same thing about the Ebay store thing. I brought this to the seller’s attention and told him to meet me half way with the car and I would bring cash or MO the next day the car was off the site.
It is fun though to play games with the sellers on there.

I almost got scammed once but thanks to Western Union, they advise me to not send the money. Lesson learned
