Appearance is completely subjective to opinion. The real point to make is that the VII has ACD+AYC without the invasive brake control. Most likely a VII - or VI - will be the fastest Evo around the track in the US. (stock-to-stock of course)

I guess I am in the minority and I might be slightly bias but I like both the 8 and the 9 better than the 7.

I personally like the IX better than the VII and if I had the chance to import the evo, I'd get the JDM spec IX.

Since we're expressing opinions, I would stick with the plan to go Autronic. Unless you need the advanced track telemetry that MoTeC Mx00 ECUs provide, the SM4 has everything you need for competition or street use, and is far less expensive to run. The Autronic SM4 (and Evo IX PnP) fuel modeling/control is extremely advanced, the auto-tuning works great, and when you buy the ECU it comes with all options enabled (e.g. antilag, traction control, no-lift-to-shift, variable cam control).

You're not going to be disappointed with either ECU, you'll just end up spending more money on the MoTeC.
