Have I destroyed my transmisson?

I was shifting into 5th and botched the shift and then for some reason tried to put it in 5th again but this time the clutch pedal was all the way out and I ground the gears. Idiot move I know but things were happening fast. Anyways, now it grinds for a second when shifting into 5th. Have I destroyed the whole thing or have I damaged only 5th gear? Can only that gear be replaced or should I start saving for a whole new transmisson? Thanks.

Gears don't mesh until the syncros let them.

Very unlikely that a gear was damaged.

You may have caused some wear on the syncros.

With luck the syncros may wear back in and become smooth again.

Not much to loose, drive it easy for awhile and see what happens.

Unless it is real bad , not worth tearing the trans down.

Thanks for the quick reply. Just did some reading on here and yeah I figure I damaged the syncro. Hopefully it sorts itself out or to the dealer I go. Any idea on cost for syncro replacement? I least it would give me an excuse to get that Exedy clutch I wanted put on too.

It's too expensive like he said. Hopefully it'll fix itself. I had this issue with 4th gear and it went away after a thousand or so miles.

Cool. Fingers crossed that it will. So should I shift normally and let it grind to wear it back in or should I shift slow and gently to minimize the grinding?
