Brake light

ok i just want to know whats causing this so i can fix it. My brake light comes on while im driving or just sitting still. does not mean anything the brake does not engage anything horrible like that the light just comes on randomly. Now when i actually do engage the brake when parked of course the light comes on like it suppose to. But as i drive around there should be no sign of it. I figured i have a bad ebrake sensor if there is one there. but im not sure. Any insight on a fix would be great. also if it is a sensor i would need the location of it.

Have you checked the fluid level by chance?

The dash brake light is connected to two things; the emergency brake switch and the brake fluid level indicator switch located in the master cylinder.

As brake pads wear the caliper pistons move out causing more brake fluid to be in the calipers and less in the master cylinder reservoir. Eventually the level in the master cylinder reservoir will be low enough to close the switch (a float). Cooler temperatures also cause the volume of brake fluid to be less.

So during this time of year, if the fluid is at the critical level, you can experience the light going on and off. A cold night will cause the light to come on and the heat from the engine will cause the light to go off. Also, the movement of the car can cause this.

So check the reservoir level and the brake pads for wear.

I'm having similar issues due to brake fluid level with worn brake pads as the others said. I'd add a bit of fluid and see if it goes away.
