Evolution Maintenance - Who Does it?
Evolution Maintenance - Who Does it?
Question for you guys who've got pretty modified evos, voided warranties, non street legal parts...
Who do you let do some of the more general maintenance on your car? I.e., replacing fuel filters, or timing belts, topping off/replacing fluids etc.. (besides oil changes)
The last time I went to a Mitsu dealer they told me my car had oil consumption because there was a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust.. but I had a test pipe, and it was negative degree weather.
Most shops won't touch a car with a test pipe either

I'll do all the basic stuff like changing fluids, filters etc. myself. If I had to have a timing belt or something like that replaced, I'd probably go to a local shop that works on Evo's.
+1...85% of the work done on my car was by me so small stuff like that I do in my garage. Like NYC said...if I don't have the special tools or if there is a small detail that I don't want to get wrong (torque, etc) I'll let a shop do it the first time and I'll learn so I can do it after that.
I do 95% of the work on mine (fluid changes, maintenance, & parts installs). If I don't have to tools for something, I'll get help. On the Evo, the only thing I've had help on is installing springs and its tune.

I'll be doing oil change, and drivetrain fluids myself. Seem pretty simple. Everything else is going to have to be a local shop unfortunately. Not hoping for anything bad but I don't trust myself replacing a timing belt yet. Most I've done is replaced springs/strut mounts on a car. Decided to try that before I tired to do brakes :P Still need to do brakes at some point....at least I finally have a car with 4 wheel disc brakes. Drums looks like a PITA.
I do everything that my tools and time will allow.
To explain I do all my own fluids (engine, tc, diff, trany). I put on any parts I buy that I can do to my DD car. An example is when I needed the clutch done. Having never done the clutch and this being my DD I chose to have a shop do it. When I finally get my TBE I will do that. The timing belt most likely I will have a shop do, though I have read the how-to.
I just like to get to do my own stuff as it is cheaper and it will help me understand the car better down the road. I don’t plan on getting rid of the Evo though someday later I may get a different DD.
