Smile New guy looking for advice.

Hello all, Ive been reading here for the past few weeks and finally decided to sign up. Ive been a Mitsubishi owner for awhile, I had a 97 Eclipse GS-T and now just regular GS with a 420a that Ive been slowly building. Im actually fresh out of college and looking to upgrade to an Evo. So the question is then, what all should I know about the VIIIs? As thats what Im looking to buy, (Hopefully a yellow one ), I figured Id ask the experts on what I need to know and what I should expect.

Before you get flamed by the search ***** (search on evom SUCKS), I suggest you make a local friend with a known good condition evo and basically listen to the drivetrain noises. Thats my biggest concern. Familiarize yourself with the different models of evos too, know what to look for ( ie 8 seats with the blue, SSL options etc. Look for a carfax report, riced out things, and ask to take it to a mechanic of choice for an inspection. Search the previous owner on here and read his posts. Its a good piece of evidence as to how he/she drove it. GL and search lol

before people say it you should know to either read the newbie guide or use search feature. there are plenty of things to look for as well. test drive the car make sure all functions work sunroof brakes clutch etc. listen for odd sounds grinding when shifting clutch slipping etc. make sure the car is pulling hard since it is turboed. unless it has a boost guage you will not know whats its boosting at so cant really check for that . Make sure your smell radar is on as well for werid smells. Could be due to no cat on car but could be other things as well. do a extremely PICKY VISUAL INSPECTION. check for things hanging in car underneath car. in engine bay check for signs of it being modded before. Majority of people now i find are putting evos back to stock to trade in or sell easier. check for T line connectors aftermark parts not removed intake small battery non factory pipping if you CAN take off intake and check the turbo and well as for shaft play LOOK FOR CRACKS IN THE MAINFOLD. boost like right there. check various cables make sure no loose cables or cut lines just there in engine bay. MOST IMPORTANT THING take it to a mechaic you can trust and get it checked out if possible as well. If you can bring somebody that owns a evo with you to look it over as well. Hope this helps

Everything that has been said above is all very good advice. A few problem areas you should be particularly watchful are the clutches, the stock clutch does not last much more than 50k if you are lucky. So if it is still stock you might need to replace that soon. Also if you are looking at a little higher milage they have a rather expensive 60k mile service so just be anticipating that also, especially if you are on a tight budget. Good Luck with the search.

You have alot of searching to do. Keep searching on the forums and you will eventually familiarize yourself with evos. Stick to the stickys and read read read. Everything you are prolly looking for is right there for you.

Either way good luck and just curious why yellow?
