Hi, New User. Any1 Plz Help Regarding An Evo4?

Hi,

New to the site and only just registered, so plz be nice

Anyways, I currently own a 92K, stg3, T34, Escort RS Cosworth. However, after browsing my region today viewing various cars in performance garages, I came across this white, 97P, Evo4 - was gorgeous! The car was in very good condition. 18" alloys, 35k miles and......360/370BHP - according to the sales guy.

After a quick chat with the bloke, I've arranged to test drive the car this coming Tuesday. The dealer said the car was "awesome" and was on par - performance wise - with his own M5.

I was wondering if any of you guys on here can give me a few tips/advice/things to look for on this car? Although I have actually been out in a std Evo5 (3years back now) I don't really know much about them? If this guy is claiming that the car is indeed 360ish BHP or whatever - what mods would have to be done to the car to achieve this power?

Looking forward to the test drive, and given the car/drive/performance really impress me - I may well buy it.....

Any info/help muchly appreciated.

Cheers

for that kind of horse power the car should have:
Full Exhaust--Including Downpipe
Air intake upgrade
Boost controller
Probally even a mabbable ecu(like gems,aem,)
if there's a boost gauge it should go past 1.5 bar thats like 22psi++
probally even some more upgrades but it should have quite a few
put look for idleing probs and unusuall noises.
good luck

Also try to find out who the original owner was so you can find out about the tuning... ie who did it, who installed the parts, any warranties that are still valid on the parts?? and definatley get mechanic to take a look at it before you buy...

not many people with escort cosworths on this site, let alone in the USA was yours brought in by sun international?

i dunno too much mechanical info on the evo 4's but from my experience driving a 6, you'll notice that its quicker and overall performs better than the escort. but its not as nimble nor does it have that "european" driving feel or interior fit and finish. i know the 6's on paper made 280PS, but were actually closer to 300. tweaks to the ECU and intake/exhaust could easily make more.

the clutches on evo's are the weakest link in the entire drivetrain and are prone to give out quickly, especially if its been subjected to frequent 5,500 rpm and drop launches. cold morning chatter and rough clutch engagement is commonplace. other than that, i think these were overall pretty reliable cars.

welcome to the site and good luck with the purchase.
