The reason I am asking is because someone trying to trade me a pair of their so called 9 tails. But I believe they are painted 8 ones. Is there a way to tell if they are painted or original 9 tails by looking at the part # or Stanley number or what not?

I believe the USDM IX tails have a chromey, shiney type of black housing, where typically, if somebody just painted a set of VIII's they'd be flat black. I'd prefer the flat black personally.

 

look around the edges of the tails for signs of cutting/gluing

If they did a bad job, the cover will probably hazed a little. But for certain that you can see excess glue.

 

Evo VIII tails are chrome.

Evo IX tails are black chrome.

JDM Evo VII tails are red.

JDM Evo VIII MR tails are flat black.

Your tails should fall somewhere in these categories.
