I can only be somewhat nice,....do you really think it only cost 15K to make a car that sells for 35K plus! I did see the smiley so I hope you are kidding......
The automotive industry is so cut-throat people are lucky to make pennies on the dollar....
I would venture to say a 35K stickered Evo cost around 31K or so to manufacture if Mitsubishi is lucky....

whoever said the stock recaro's are 6-8 grand....OEM Recaro's (without leather) MSRP from the dealer for a 2006 is $2,365.71 for ONE!!!! holy ****
15k manufacturing cost is probably just material cost and design only, not including shipping and storage, marketing, legal fee, transactions etc
32k for 20k accord is probably actual cost for dealers to buy parts, and the mechanics installed themselves. If each part was bought at MSRP, it would easily be over 50k, then there would be installation fee, as a lot of part may require certified Honda mechanics and parts that cannot be done without Honda provided tools.
I think over $100k is very correct for an evo if all parts are bought at MSRP, and if paid for installation on at least parts that are just too risky to DIY or do it at a local shop. Try to estimate the total price of major parts:
- Chassis and frame
- Crate engine + ECU + Battery (so includes all wiring, fuel system, turbo, intercooler etc)
- Transmission, driveshaft, axle, ACD, AYC, fluids and controllers
- Brakes, wheels, tires, suspension and bracings
- Doors, headlight and tail lights, hood, trunk, fuel tank, spare tire, trunk linings
- Seats, interior panels, windows, any power units, radio, antenna, sound deadening, lightings and wires
I may have missed a lot but I should have covered majority of expensive ones
Stock brakes were more expensive than 6pot AP Racing brakes, stock seats are almost as expensive as carbon or carbon-kevlar bucket seats, stock BBS costs more than larger size Volk Racing wheels. The MSRP is ridiculous, so you can imagine how the rest of parts mentioned above may cost, and all that would easily top $100k.

When I went to the dealer to get a quote on a couple of front end parts I was just shocked and in disbelief. 3gz for radiator+ac condensor+ intercooler BUT this is without any piping or brackets. 1500 hood!!! without latches or the grill. 2000 headlights (HIDs) 450 each fender without fender lining. Not only that I have a 20% discound and the parts were still so expensive I seriously payed less to rebuild a 2008 335I coupe I payed 500 for hood at the dealer and mitsu wants 1500 for their wow
that from my perspective of working in a dealership is %100 true some parts have a markup more than 5x our price and its crazy but hey a lot of oem parts imo have a lot less defects as compared to most aftermarket companys i see
We went calculating that once already, at the dealership I go to now and then(in euro prices) We stopped at 300k euros and we were far from done. (~450k usd).
(Price of the evo here is about 70k $ for reference)

we arent talking about marketing, legal, design, assembly or any other fees that go along with this. we are talking about if you bought all the parts at dealer MSRP..... not sure why people keep bringin up all this other crap

buying parts as a consumer is completely different than buying as a multi million dollar company. of course, if we calculate the prices as we, the consumer, would get them at, it would be substantially higher than what the company pays or makes it for. someone said 15k earlier? it might even be less than that. the car itself may be under 10k, add in all the research, marketing, and what not, and you have the price we pay. but if you were gonna do it piece by piece, you might as well buy a ferrari or something already put together.
