STARTER/ flywheel issue aka HELP!

hey im wondering if anyone knows a solution for the starter/ flywheel issue rather than rocking the car back and forth to get the flywheel to move.

it all started after i got my transmission replaced last weekend and STARTED having the problem 2 days later it wont crank just clicks.. keep trying and eventually turns on after i rock the car while in gear more. DONT want to keep doing this. all electrical stuff works fine in ACC mode (lights, heater, radio gauges etc..)

maybe u can answer a few questions:

1-what exactly is causing this?

2-what is messing up starter or flywheel?

3-how can u test the starter to rule that out if it works fine?

4-if not starter do i need to replace the flywheel?

put a test light to the starter and see if the starter is getting power. if it is, then it's probably a bad starter. most likely since it starts when you push start the car, its a bad starter. a loose connection to the starter is possible also. you would have to remove the starter and hook up the starter to a seperate battery and see if the, um, spinning thing in the starter spins and extends. (i forgot what it is called.) i would recheck all connections, power and ground, and then move to removing the starter. good luck.

If you do the ^(above) it can do two things.

1. If the pinion turns but does not extend, its the Magnetic switch.

2. If the pinion extends but does not turn, its the Starter Motor.

The starter runs off a ground. So ground the unit to the chassis and connect the battery to the switch.

sounds too me the bendix on the starter is going out(piece that extends) as someone already said. Take it off and hook a jump box to the posts to see if she works fine. make sure you have ahold of the sucker or put it in a vise tho.

Ya i would most definetly agree with everyone here. Its not to hard to pull out.... The splash shield is probably the worst part about it all.

Just cause the Bendix drive shoots out doesnt mean its good. You have to remember that the starter is under a load while trying to spin the flywheel when its on the car. If you take it out and test it and works it might still be bad, keep that in mind. I would just replace it, sound like the solenoid is good so its not that.

I've had experiences with this issue on other peoples Evo..changing the starter is probably the fix..

sounded like an electrical issue to me...Either the ground on the tranny or loose power wire at the starter terminal, even a bad battery cable. I have yet to see an evo starter go out, if I was a starter I would want to be on an evo, low compression small motor makes for an easy day.
