I see your position, but I think it is being way too overly cautious. If you are a safe enough driver and pay attention, you should be able to avoid most accidents in an Evo. Track brakes, track handling, track speed... All on the street. Make for quite the defensive driving vehicle.

The only accident I have ever been in was when I was stopped at a light and a car backed out of their driveway into me. That is it. But trust me, I've avoided quite a few with a quick tap on the brakes or a flick of the steering wheel or a downshift and accelerate.

Go take a defensive driving class and get involved with your local autocross. Then start doing HPDEs.

Defensive driving will teach you how to avoid things and what to look for. Autocross develops your quick reactions (because they are typically so tight) and object avoidance (cones = bad ) . Then HPDEs will get you used to high speeds and other cars being around. I'm certainly no pro, but I can (and have) quite often predicted spin outs of cars in front of me. And being at those speeds and getting used to predicting other drivers' movements makes it easier to predict things at low speeds and being on track with other cars starts getting you used to looking everywhere.

If I notice a suburban not slowing down for a light, if I can avoid it, I will. There is little point in risking your life or the life of your passengers by putting in a solid metal bar within head bashing distance.

I've always felt as though the Evo's greatest asset in a potential crash is its ability to avoid the crash due to its handling prowess in conjunction with the attentiveness/ability of the driver.

absolutely terrible idea to have a roll cage in a DD....the idea that these cars don't "wreck well" is a moot point....pick another chassis...

A roll bar will do very little to help against a t-bone. If you want t-bone protection, you need to have the vertical bar behind your seat braced with an X going through the middle of the car. You will need to have NASCAR like door protection that will require you to cut your doors and install a proper full cage to be able to brace them properly. I don't think what you want is doable.

A agree with the suggestions of learning defensive driving. It will work for you a lot of the times but not all of the time of course. I managed to avoid quite a few accidents in the past by being aware, even just sitting there at a light. I got out of the way before someone plowed into to me. I'm always ready to go, I don't "park" at lights, I'm always looking around 360 ready to gun in forwards or backwards.

And this doesnt apply to evo's only, any small car vs other bigger car/suv/pickup.

buy a bigger vehicle for dd, like a big dodge 3500 diesel. Lift it, install a roll cage, drive around with a helmet, hans device, harness. youll be safe from any t bone.
on a more serious note, accidents can happen, you cant really avoid it. That is a risk in life, unless you want to live in a bubble. most practical thing you can do is to practice being a defensive, aware driver. If you really are that concerned, then maybe a truck would be more fitting for your needs instead of an evo.

OK, i guess i can't do much.
And the part about the lights is true too. i do check 360 when i am stopped, who is behind me etc, never ever go first on green light, like some ppl i've seen just floor at as soon as its green light etc. (its a good thing the car is manual and takes time to put it into first etc (I DONT have an evo yet :P, Driving a 5spd Ford Explorer)

And about going to a track, i think that every driver should go to a track with their ride. Just to experiment, find the limits of their car etc, and not do it on public roads.

Case closed. No bars unless its only for the track,

Maybe side airbags??> Does evo IX have any side airbags??

Buy a X. They have side airbags. And better crash ratings IIRC.

A roll cage could help at least in the side impact.

Looking to do this for a daily driven car. And all seats usable. Something like 4point cage, nothing TOO serious.

Anybody have done this?

haha i have a cage but its not a track car. it has seem some street driving for fun but I would not recommend it a bit. It's really not going to help you in the street..

You should see the "Jaws o life" try to cut through 1 3/4" cold rolled steel tubing.. Its not easy

This is one of those impossible to answer equations, because there's too many variables to ever know if it'd actually help side impact, unless it's a stage rally cage.
