Grey Smoke Only at WOT

OK so recently I've been having very excessive amounts of greyish smoke from my exhaust only at WOT...and I mean only at WOT. Cold start there is none, warm idle there is none, and regular cruise there is none. But the second I put my foot down, grey smoke bellows out the back, suffocating whoever is behind me. It's pretty damn excessive.

I recently just installed a brand new Walbro 255 if that makes any difference. I know it's running pig rich (almost 10.0:1 during 3rd gear pull) so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with the actually quantity and density of the smoke coming out.

But then again, it's not black smoke which I'm accustomed to. Definitely a lighter shade than normal...

Is this a head gasket problem? I kinda thought that, if it was, I would be experiencing smoke all the time.

Someone help?

Thanks

generally, oil burns black/grey and coolant burns white. That being said, my buddy's evo with a milspec cat belches some black smoke when he gets on it, it could just be the tune his car has- better to run rich than lean at peak boost.

Could be that you are running rich from the Walbro FP and excess fuel is not being burnt up. Did you get a tune after the install?

Grey smoke can also indicate internal valve seals are shot or something with the pistons. But I would start with a tune or adjusting your map.

It could most likely be that the walbro is pouring a lot more fuel than actually needed and it isn't being burnt. After a mod like a Walbro you should get a tune.

No it hasn't been tuned yet and that's really where I wanted to start before believing in the grim news that my HG might be shot.

It's been just abnormal seeing that much smoke and in that shade of color.

I'll try leaning it out tonight and see where that gets me...

Thanks guys...any other opinions?

i believe you're burning fuel my friend.

let me share something with you for peace of mind:

Im tuned for e85 and 93 on 1600cc injectors to push my 35r. Due to the large injectors and double pumps, i run excessively rich down low and early midrange on pump gas. Regardless of how much i tinker with aem, its rich whether i like it or not when using 93. As rich as i am, I only see black smoke at wot, and its a significant amount of smoke. My thoughts are that its a rich condition.

The only other option is you're getting excessive blow by, however i think you would notice.

just my 2cents

No it's been previously tuned.

That's exactly what I've been worrying about.

I'm leaning it out tonight...gonna try to get it around 11.5:1 and I'll have to check again for smoke in the morning...

you should get a tune after a mod like the walbro... It doesn't flow in the same way the stock one does

edit nvm, I see you got tuned

As stated, I think you're being overly cautious. Even stock evo's, be it 8,9, or 10, blow some greyish black smoke out at WOT. Its more than likey just unburnt fuel

Well it was previously tuned but that was before the 255. I just leaned it out a little bit. Aiming for 11.5:1 but it's night time and I can't see if there's still smoke.
