went to carmax today.....hahahah!
Similar thing happened to my friend however his is an 05 with 20k miles also ssl and they told him 14k. He looked at the appraiser and was like funny u say 15k when you have a 03 with 56k miles on the lot for 17.5. The appraiser had no idea what to tell him
Which is BS because auction prices are up @12% from where they were a year ago and the used car market is stronger than it's been for quite a while.

That said I don't get the shock. They aren't going to give you retail for it. They've got to make money on it and lets face it a car like an evo is a risk for them. They sure as hell aren't going to buy for $1K less then they can sell it for and just that they can just wash it, put it on the lot and not need to repair a bunch of stuff they didn't see at the time they bought it.

I realize they were not gona give me retail, and I realize they are a business and have to make money, but I still think 12k is pretty low, oh well ill just try private sell
It's Carmax...they deal with desperate people all the time, you shouldn't be surprised by the lowball offer. In an economy that is causing people to lose their jobs and homes, these guys are simply sharks in a sea of used car chum.
Sell it privately.
Sell it privately.
i recently took my srt4 to carmax just to get an idea, and i was suprised by the low ball offer too. it did help give me an idea for price thru private party, which is what i did and sold it for more then carmax wanted to give me, but not exactly what kbb stated.
g/l sellin!

Sux that they probably beat the crap out of your car just to let them appraised what's its worth. Don't know why but they don't need to drive hard to know if the car is in good condition or not. Carmax
My 2005 Evo 8 MR has been holding value at just above $20,000 for the past couple years and I am currently at 48k miles and today when I checked it, it was worth $20,1xx.
MR's are holding their value a bit better than GSR models I believe.

KBB is not what dealers used. IF you get hyped up about their numbers for trade values, you will always get your feelings hurt when you go in to a dealer. Most dealers use Black Book which is much lower then KBB on trade in. Also, if you have a car with over 100K miles ignore them completely, you won't get anywhere near that at a dealer.
A car is only worth what the next person will pay for it, but if you have bald tires, cracked windshield, prior paintwork and a slipping clutch you can expect a dealer to subtract about $2000 from whatever "average" trade value is from your car.

Took a Touareg to Carmax years back...I didn't have high expectations and their offer was not great but it was better than the dealer trade-in value so I took it. I could have made 1k maybe 2k more selling private.
^^couldn't agree more with last two posts ... car only worth what you can sell it for in the market ... not what some website spits out. Not like you can 'click to sell car'. Same ppl who sit there and say 'my car worth x more than what i was offered' are the guys who show up to my house with tattered printout in their hand saying 'your car is worth x less b/c its an RS' works both ways
Back in 02 I took my car to them too, they offered me 30k for my car, I ended selling her private for 55k!
Carmax is when your desperate and need quick money, whenever you get quick money you get screwed.
