Evo black box - Anyone ever find it?
Does anybody here remember back in 2003 when the First Evos were brought to the U.S. and everyone was blowing out the TC within the first 10k miles and there was a huge discussion that the car may have a 'black box' so mitsu can go back and see what the motor was doing during the failure?
I remember threads poping up all the time back then. Mitsu using it as a way to void cars. I also herd some dealers were giving out autoXing passes with purchases in 03. Then they would spy at the event and void any Evos that competed. I Think they also spy'd at some Drag strips back then to catch Evos in the act.
I could be wrong we are talking like 7 years ago now, lol. I am guessing if there was actually a black box there would be all kinds of "how Too's" out there for removing or even reflashing them if there was a failure, Just guessing

most of the vin/tag voidness was when you took your car to a dealer.. and they saw something... they record it on the mitsu master computer.. and you get f'ed...
if they see a clutch.. there goes your drive train...
if your car idles funny there goes your motor coverage.. etc
all based on vin

There is no black box he can pull to get info. Your ecu stores values, which could be read with a scan tool via your obd2 port. obd2 has much more info to look at than obd1. You can hook up a scan tool and read live data and most recent info. There are parts in the ecu that will store much more info, like what rpm you were at when the tranny blew, for example, but alot of times is only accessible to the manufacturer and propietary dealership diagnostic tools.
You should have called out the cop on his bs. I do remember a few years ago GM was talking about putting some black box thing in the vehicles for crashes or what not, but I think it was really more of software they were programming into their ecus, but I could be wrong.

the airbag computer has a rom that records the last two minutes of driving, and keeps rewriting itself. every car since maybe 05 has had to include them. we learned about it when i was doing my ASE certification. it records off of internal g sensors so all it needs is power.
