Question HELP!! Cat-back exhaust and my warranty!?

Guys, I need you help/advice. I really want to get just a cat-back exhaust, however, I really dont want to lose my warranty. Does anyone know how dealers react to this simple mod? I wouldnt think it would be any problem, but I have heard some horror stories on here. My dealer right now is Libertyville Mitsu in Libertyville, IL. Does any know their policy specifically? or had any trouble with them? Do you know of any mod friendly dealers in the chicago area? Thanks in advance for all your help!!

This is a shot in the dark, but if you want to know how your dealer would react, I'd suggest contacting them and finding out for yourself

You might ask them. If I where to get a catback what would it do. Because some of them will void it even if you tell them. Be carefull my dealership said any mod would void my warranty.

I bought my Eclipse from Biggers Mitsu. in Elgin and they are a pretty mod friendly dealership. They didn't mind the turboback exhaust or any of my other mods. Worst case scenario is just swap on your stock parts if you need major warranty work done. It is a pain, but that is what happens when you want to modify.

My dealer (Maywood Mitsu) says the only thing a turbo-back would void is the O2 sensor warrenty if it fails, thats all.

The way I understand it: the warranty is voided if the problem arises as a result of the mod. I, too, am extremely close to installing an exhaust (Borla). In fact it should be arriving within a day or two.

bogie, you are entirely correct, if you install a cat-back, and your brembo's stop working....mitsu some how has to fabricate a reason why the exhaust made the brakes stop working, and they have to prove it. but if you melt your bumper, thats a different story.

Just be careful, they can say any mod (even a 'simple' cat-back) increases power and try to void the majority of your engine parts due to increased stress. A friend of mine got burned by it last year (by Nissan not ). If they say OK do what GROD said and get it in writing!

Good luck

I had my EVO in on the 8th to get the oil changed in it. They had it on the lift and was just in awe over the cat back. I brought it back in today with the down pipe and got the same response. Some guy over heard me telling one of the techs about my intake and he just interrupted and said:

dealer guy: "a intake will void the whole warrenty."

me: "so if my windows stop working, you gonna tell me my intake caused that?"

dealer guy" "well it voids the whole warrenty."

me: "I've been through this before with just about every car I've owned, you have to prove that part caused the problem the car is in for. It's the law. All I'm doing is changing the pipping that is allready there and putting a better pipe and filter on it...really not much different."

dealer guy: "I was just warning you."

me: "Thanks for the warning, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there I guess."

When I had my ITR with the AEM CAI on it the dealer told me about if water ruined the motor it would not be covered. I understood that and never had a problem with having warrenty work being done on it.

It just depends. If the cat breaks for example after u install ur catback, and they see that the breaks happened where it connected to your catback, it might just be a defective cat, but because you have a catback and had it installed somewhere else (or u did it), they can say that it was not properly torqued, maybe it happened when you had it installed, etc. If the turbo breaks after you installed a cat-back, it would be hard for them to deny you warrantee. I think the exhaust is one of the safest systems you can install on a car without voiding your warrantee.

The dealer CANNOT void your warranty. There is no such thing as a "void a warranty" button at your dealership. ALL car manufatures approach each warranty claim as a per claim basis. Installing a catback exhaust will not and cannot void your warranty. Only certain areas RELATED to the install Mitsubishi can refuse to pay that particular claim (like if your stock exhaust hangers breaks because of the new exhaust for example). Use your common sense on what you install and be fair to the manufacture for what may have failed because of your mods. Remember, when it comes to warranty issues Mitsubishi paids the claim, not the dealer, so they do have the right to refuse certain claims but they cannot just void your warranty. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Winston
