Exhaust Ticket
(a) Compliance with established sound levels.--Every motor
vehicle operated on a highway shall be constructed, equipped,
maintained and operated so as not to exceed the sound level for
the vehicle as prescribed in regulations promulgated by the
department. The test procedures and instrumentation to be
utilized shall also be established by regulation.
(b) Compliance with exhaust requirements.--In addition to
any requirements established under sections 4531 (relating to
emission control systems) and 4532 (relating to smoke control
for diesel-powered motor vehicles), every motor vehicle shall be
constructed, equipped, maintained and operated so as to prevent
engine exhaust gases from penetrating and collecting in any part
of the vehicle occupied by the driver or passengers.
(c) Mufflers and related equipment.--Every motor vehicle
shall be equipped with a muffler or other effective noise
suppressing system in good working order and in constant
operation and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped
with a cutout, bypass or similar device.
(d) Unauthorized modification of equipment.--No person shall
modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which
will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the
vehicle above the maximum levels permitted under subsection (a)
or violate the provisions of subsection (b). Headers and side
exhausts are permitted provided the vehicle meets all the
requirements of this section.
(e) Fire equipment and racing vehicles.--This section does
not apply to fire equipment or to racing vehicles being operated
in an organized racing or competitive event conducted under a
permit issued by local authorities.
According to this, as long as you meet decibel limitations, you can modify your exhaust. HOWEVER, that limit is quite low (in the 80's I believe).

After talking with him and you realized you were getting no where with kindness you didnt happen to say "Just one question, do you know how much power this car makes? Do you really think you could have caught me if I shut my lights off and put the hammer down?" Cause they dont like that

- Anything above factory noise levels is illegal
- Anything that they think is noisy is illegal - several have told me this
And its funny that they get this power because the one that was a ***** even though I was nice was the one that pulled over a buddy of mine and actually pointed at my car as I drove by and said I don't like those cars; i'm gonna get him next. How ****ed up is that? Just because he doesn't like my car?
Cops are here to protect us and I respect them for that but when they abuse the power that somehow is not limited AT ALL it just pisses me off so bad. There should be regulation for law enforcement. I know several cops and they have basically said the same thing about the power trips and how they get away with it. It sickens them too. ....end rant. haha
just put a stock exhaust back on, go to the court house and say it's stock. they'll throw the ticket out. then go home and put the other one back on.
also, you guys need to check your local laws on exhaust modifications instead of speculating widly from different areas of the country. every state is different, and your local county/parish, or even city may have it's own laws on the issue. the city i'm from, there is a city ordinance that says ANY modification is illegal even if it doesn't make any changes to emissions/sounds, etc. ANYthing you do is illegal. that's not a state wide, or even parish wide thing, just in that city. So get familiar with the law, then you'll know how to fight it.
easiest way is to just put the stocker back on long enough to get the ticket thrown out.

It'll happen every once in a while man....you get that one guy that will pull you over, and hes not being a d**k, just doin his job...Just pay the fine and be on your way
I have had 5% tint and a custom exhaust on my car and have only been pulled over once in 3 years...its just depends on the cop
Alot of the cops around here actually happen to like my evo LOL

I got pulled over the first night I had my evo. I was literally sitting at a light just waiting for it to turn around. He passed me and whipped a u-turn in the middle of the road and flipped his lights on. He asked me "How much have you had to drink?"... really.. lol I dont understand the law sometimes. I cant even sit at a light without getting messed with.
so i was driving 100% normal tonight, a cops pulls me over saying my exhaust was to loud, i was driving at 2,500 RPM.
so after getting done talking to him, he decides to give me a tint ticket also, so i got two tickets for driving normal in the dark.
ive had my car for almost 2 years now, not one ticket in it and it has been the same since day one of owning it.. this cop was just an d*ck
just going to pay the tickets, fell like i had to let my aggression out n share with people how g*y cops are

Next time you see a cop coast past them w the clutch in, works every time, if they still pull you over its because they are being a *ick and are profiling if you have a spoiler on the car.

i got pulled over around there and they gave me a ticket for tint and obstruction of view with a gauge on the apillar!
You're in PA and you should fight the exhaust ticket. I got one of those a couple years ago and it was thrown out in court because it was total BS. Basically, unless the officer uses a DB meter in the correct manor and is fully trained to do so the ticket is bogus. You should fight it and not just roll-over, its your rights we're talking about here!
I still have all the case info if you need something for reference. there have been precedents set for this type of violation and the officer in way in the wrong. stand up for your rights!

Here is a post from my original thread a couple years ago with some info:

haha i totally agree with you man. i had my first evo for only 13 days, just driving normal to my friends house, till a cop thought he could run a red light to only hit me in the middle of the intersection and totaled my car. ever since then it has changed my view on cops because in the first police report the cop lied and said he stopped at the limit line and entered the intersection at 5 MPH (actually going 45-50) clearing lane by lane (which he didnt do). Definitely fighting this one and going to court over it since i had to have surgery on my shoulder and lost my job so i know exactly how you feel about them.
that has to be the worst cop story I've ever heard
sorry to hear about that man.
