Question for those who have done it...
how much does it cost to do an engine rebuild? I'm not talking anything fancy. Just a rebuild for reliability. What all is usually done? Could I rebuild/retune my motor to close to stock specs for less than $3000? Stock displacement, compression, and everything.
I just rebuilt mine, upgraded the pistons, rods and bearings and might as well add the AMS balance shaft delete kit. Engine was removed and rebored as well. It was a touch over $5k. That's a shop doing it also. If you are doing it yourself you could probably get it done for $3k depending on parts.
I trashed the motor in my talon ~5years ago and build a 2.4l with eagle/wiseco stuff for 2k. That included the block, a 1g head, machining, and all the other 2.4l conversion stuff. I already had some of the stuff like the intake mani and got really good deals on the block and head, $50 & $100 respectively but still it was pretty cheap and the thing is holding together like a champ.

I'm not doing it myself. I don't have the time, the experience, or the patience. I just want to drop it off somewhere, and pick it up when it's done. I do routine work, and most installs on my car, but lengthy and complicated work like this I'd rather leave to the professionals.
the guy that built his 2.4 that cheap was lucky, i agree with letting a shop do certain things, yes you'll spend an extra 1,000.00 but 9 times out of 10 that shop guarenttees there work, so if something breaks they will fix it for sure, i'm in that boat with my bottom end, got a great young kid for a mechanic that knows his sh@t from top to bottom and even has the 200 dollar tool to put O rings on the pistons, however, if he f@cks up and my engine go's boom, he doesn't come with a guarenttee like the shop will.

I was in the same situation but to do it properly is about the same cost as building it for more power (you don't have to go for more power).
Labour is the same and OEM parts cost the same if not more then the aftermarket stuff.
This is if you aren't doing the work yourself. Labour from a reputable shop is about 1700ish. After that is all in how much you want to spend in parts.

I am in the process of rebuilding mine now. going cheap is only going to save you at most $1000. I tried costing it out such. so i spent the extra $1000 and went with the buschur 2.0LR. This way you also know you are getting good parts that will last.
Being a poor college student with lots of free time made the search for deals necessary. Unused used parts sitting in peoples garages for 25-50% off really help keep build costs down
Now I probably wouldn't bother going through that much effort and would just contract it out to English racing or buy one of MAP's blocks for the peace of mind. Id still be doing the work to swap it myself though...Still cant justify spending the 1500-2000 for work I can do in two weekends.
