Do I risk it?
I slipped past 10,000 miles last week with no problems. The only recall I am aware of effected a few of the early imports (I got my car in April, and it was fine). Honestly, the Evo is everything my fd was, but with 4 doors and 4 seats...
There is a part of me that wishes I didn't have such a large montly payment, but I know I would not like driving a "normal" car. IMO, nothing for the money touches the Evo when it comes to performance & utility. The STi is close, (about the same performance wise) but the bigger back seat on the Evo is the deal breaker for me. That, and I have wanted an Evo since I saw one on a trip to the UK in 1996. (my first real exposure to the "other world" of cars that weren't/aren't imported to the US)

I drag race my EVO and I've added an additional 100 hp to the crank, 10,500 miles so far on my factory clutch and no problems yet.
I've never regretted the day walking in to the Mitsu dealer and giving a brand new EVO a home.
GO FOR IT!!!

To some people it may be there first performance car , one of the issues that i have read on it . It has been the clutch , Drag racing gets the best out of the cars and went you drag race you attent to break things . Trannies, axles and clutches . Specially on a car that is ment more for auotcross and rally then 1/4 mile. The car is a blast to drive and have no regrets in the purchase that i have made.
Don't listen to all the people complaining. I agree with the previous posts. People will find something to complain about. Trust me, if you drive an Evo for a week, you'll never be able to go back to something else. Not a cheap car, but you'll love paying for it! BTW 6000 miles, beat on extensively, and no problems!

I guess it's just best to say that the dealership that repaired my car in April did not replace the third (main cat) and now I'm looking at another failing engine. The car is currently parked awaiting determination of the hearing. There is nothing even remotely close to what you guys are experiencing on your cars yet that compare with the MR2 but it is early on still. I'm just worried about ending up with a repeat of what I'm currently trying to get out of.
Interesting reading if you like this kind of stuff. It might make you feel sorry for these guys when you see them driving around on the steet. And when you get poor customer service at your Mitsubishi dealerships, know that you are not the only ones that it is happening to.
Toyota is doing a pretty good job of keeping this a secret. At least the EVO has the recall(s).

Thanks for all the replys. I appreciate the information.
Wow, well that explains some of the higher costs of a toyota, the just add in the price the extra engines I guess. Wow that really blows. That's an pretty large group there with engine failures. What's with the catalytic converters being replaced? Do they start leaking? or clogging up? The 2nd gen MR2s(5SFE) , even the Turbos (3SGTEs) never had these kind of failures.
Do you have the SMT on your MR2?

I was feeling the same way as you, but I guess in this situation you just go with what you want and bite the bullet. If you saw that thread that asked current Evo owners if there was anything wrong with their Evos, 84% (including modded Evos) were trouble free. You don't want to get a car that will keep you thinking, "Hmm, I wonder what it would be like if i got an Evo?". I say, since they're here right now, go for it. Cause Mitsu might stop selling here. I'm getting an Evo in a few weeks!

The original short blocks had a problem. Destruction of the precats then blockage of the main cat caused major oil consumption. When the oil consumption hits it hits fast. I burned 2-1/2 quarts of oil 480 miles after an oil change and was lucky not to blow my engine the first time when I caught it.
I haven't heard back about my arbitration yet, but when I do if all goes well, I think I'll buy the Evo, so you guys may be seeing me around in the future. Thanks for all the feedback.
