The clincher for me was 2-fold.

1) My racing team is 99% WRX so I wanted to head a different direction (Just to be different).

2) I had a WRX so it didn't feel like I was changing anything going to the STi. Granted there is a world of difference between the STi and the WRX, but I didn't feel enough of one to want to make the change.

Also, I see more STi's around than I do EVOs and I prefer to not look too much like a lemming.

Whichever car you end up with, however, you'll be happy, they are both great performers for the price.

I didn't like the doors on the STi nor the seats. I had too much room in the them which is bad around corners. Maybe better for bigger guys.
Evo's on the other side were much better, if only lower side support was like on the Euro/JDM models it'd be perfect.
I also liked the Evo FMIC and engine a bit better - well known engine, not a brand new US-only 2.5L. Also, to me Evo was a little bit more appealing as far as exterior design is concerned and finally, Evo was cheaper.

Only way to decide is to go test drive both cars
Pretty sure after the EVO test drive you will be saying STi who??

VW GTI R32 could be an option. There's an awesome comparison of the EVO/STI/R32 at EVOM. The STI & EVO are meaner, of course, but one of its still a beast. The rally cars have a looser suspension than the VW.

Yep take into account that there are other awd turbo car(lots of them) but if you have narrowed yoru choices down to the sti/evo really it comes down to price and what you want to do with them. I know that the engine is an evolved version of a 13 year old motor so you know its tried and true for the evo and it has the fmic and seems to have more aftermarket support from what I have found. It has a little less power out toe box but the steering and cornering are much better. They both have the adjustable hids and are very similar in a lot of ways besides the fmic/top mount and motor displacement. I also hate the hood on the sti but to each his own. Go test drive them( I was able to test drive by just quilifying not depositing any money and I am 21 so you should be ok). When it comes down to it we all can tell you to buy one or the other but your the one that has to live with the 300-500 car payment(depending on how much you put down) so you want to make sure its what you want not what I want.

Hey guys, I've been browsing this site, the NASIOC site, and the WRX sites for some time now, and I must say AWD+turbo = magic. Not only in performance but practical use as well...
As of next Nov. the lease on my 01' Celica expires, and I'm free to purchase a new ride!!! This time around I'm going to do it right...
I'm aiming for around 8 - 10k down, and a payment in the 300 - 375$ range. I'm going to PURCHASE, not lease ever again, and this time I'm going to be patient enough to at least wait for the color I really want, lol.

our situations are so similar its scary
but i am set on the evo
have to wait till jan 05

02 gts with action package and trd gets me A to B for now

Been there, done that. I had a 2000 S4. I traded the high maintenance German ***** for the high sprung Japanese race queen I now have. I haven't regretted the decision for a single moment and I'm glad to not have to fret over a $10,000 turbo swap or a $10,000 transmission replacement.

I can't comment on the STi as they weren't around when I was shopping, however I wasn't looking too hard for a Subaru. These seem kinda scarce around the DC area.

FWIW, I can say that the back seat of the Evo is roomy for it's class. The bench seat is kinda flat but at least you can get in and out easy enough... certainly easier than the S4.

twan, have you went to the track in your GT-S? Funny thing happened when I did, lol - completely stock, I ran a 15.3 in about 80 degree weather,a nd then after new tires and the TRD exhaust, I can't break a 16... That's right, a 16!!! I think its due to the tires though, they're ****ty firehawks... The stock yoko's only lasted 10k miles, but they're what got me my 15.3

As for my decision - I'm going to start calling dealerships and seeing if I can get a chance test the cars out. Plus waiting a year will weed out all the bugs of a new car production on both the Mitsu and Subie.
For now (since I have only 4k miles left on my lease, and 11 months to go) a 90' Dodge spirit gets me from A to B, lol.

Plus, I though the backseat area looked virtually identical between the 2 cars?
To me, getting the sti was a much better choice
+ 6 speed
+ .5 more liters
+ much better dash and Gagues
+ much better interrior ( except the evos have those nice recaros )
+ DCCD
+ Bulletproof Clutch and tranny
+ STI can take 7k launches
- No radio
+ better singing voice because of no radio
+ Much cooler guys at the dealership where i live

The dealership for Mitsubishi over in Raleigh told me the last evo they were going to get was a used red evo which tons of people beat on it had like 1200 miles on it. Then 2 months later, they have like 6 at the dealership (lieing son of biatches)

I know people say that the EVO's engine is proven, which it is, but i think when tuners crack open the STi's engine, it will be just as good

either way you go, EVO and STi is like Pepsi or Coke, or if you prefer fruit, Apples and Oranges, just find the car that YOU like, not the rest of the people. You can always make a car faster

just my 2 cents

Every comparo I have read gives the nod to the EVO as the most fun to drive. Read Automobile magazines Car of The Year write up. The STI lacks the X factor. Ha!

I only ran auto X with it. No 1/4 mile yet but i think i may in the Spring before the car goes back.
Stock tires lasted 2 auto-x events and 10k normal miles.
I run yoko avs es100's now.
Also wasted a clutch at 25k.
I have an 02 with the ****ty limiter as well =\
Thank god its a lease lol.
