If you're REALLY worried, you can do it with the car running. I've washed down the bay in a lot of cars though, and as long as its a modern vehicle with quality electrical connections, you'll be fine.

just cover the air filter and your good to go, but that doesnt mean you sit in one place for awhile

i always spray down my bays with simple green after letting the motor get to operating temp, let the simple green sit for a min or 2, scrub the greasy/dirty parts with a brush then use the pressure washer

follow up with some spray on tire detailer and your engine bay will look better than new!

I did it a few times on my IX. I put a bag over the air filter. Make sure you clean the bottom side of the hood. Alot of people neglect cleaning that area.

Try and stay away from the degreasers-- a rinse spray should be fine. Stay away from the alternator, power steering pump and anything else with bearings--. not too worried about the other items--all else should be good

It's fine to spray it down. Just cover the filter and use a mist.

I like to go to the do it yourself style car washes and use their spotless rinse on the underhood of my car. There is less pressure and the water is less likely to leave waterspots. For heavy grease and grime, I will use Simple Green MAX degreaser. I also just make sure not to spray the air cleaner directly. If I do the wash at home, with a garden hose, then I wipe it down when Im done. Make sure to drive it after you wash it so any water evaporates.

All the electrical connections underhood were engineered to be water resistant.

I have never had any problems washing the engine bays of vehicles.

Just avoid directly hitting electrnoics with high pressure, it might allow water past the seals. It may not cause immediate problems, but the possibility for corrosion might cause headaches in the future.

I agree with most, cover the filter and as long as you keep the sprayer moving you should be fine. It's how all my detailing friends do it (they also say to do it while engine running too not sure why).....Blowing everything off with compressed air would be the best but deff not necessary, I just take it for a good drive to get heat inside the engine bay to help dry the water out. I used to do it everyday on the short buses with gas engines and they were fine. I do it with tractor trailers everyday but they're diesel and a different ball game (no ignition system) but still has plenty of wires and theyre fine.

When I do it at work I spray it down to get the dust off, dry it with compressed air, then put a light coat of wd-40 on most stuff to help keep it from rusting and displace any water (hence the name..WD-water displacement)
Do u still work somewhere down eastgate blvd or did u recently quit there. Cuz I currently work over at genesco back over 40 off 109 and seen u bout a month ago and was wondering who drove it since evos around here are scarce few and far in between lol. Twice a year I cover the whole bay with de-greaser and spray down with a pressure washer, then let the care idle for about 15mins with the hood closed to dry everything out. Been doing this on all our cars for years without any problems. Just cover the filter if your running an open element.

A lot of hand wash places will do it for you for around $25. A good option if you want it done by professionals and are afraid of damaging any electronics and what not.

I know people do this all the time, but this still worries me. I don't think I could bring myself to do it. With my luck, something would happen and I would spend weeks trying to figure out what I broke.
