Where can I get some good information on turbos?

Hi all,

I'm sick and tired of everyone speaking about different housings, HTA, PTE, Garrett, 16g, 20g, 30r, gt35, 6262, 50 trim, etc. and not being able to understand or to point out the differences. Understand the flow charts, etc. I've done alot of research on this site but every thread I get into is too technical for me. I've googled and I come up with very simple explanations on what a turbo is.

I know how a turbo works, but I don't know what each part does and what does the different series or numbers mean. Please help me out, I wan't to learn

inducer squared divided by exducer squared x 100 gives you the trim of the turbo i believe

Simple solution, call up a turbo shop or find a resource specifically for turbos.

Garret has some excellent articles on thier website, read those, and it should give u a good idea of a trim, exducer, inducer, comp maps...etc are.

If this helps this is the size of the turboes from smallest to largest.

16g, 20g, 50 trim, 30r, gt35r, 6262.

It also depends on the hot side size of the turbo as well which will help with spool. Examples of .63ar, .82ar, .86ar, etc. Larger the number the slower the spool.

A lot of things come into play with spool thou.

Read the tech info on Garrett websites. You have to be careful not to get confused. For example a GT3582 has an 82mm compressor wheel but is the same size as a PTE6262 which has a 62mm compressor wheel. Confused yet? You should be... Both turbos are relatively the same size. However, Garrett names their turbos based off of the compressor wheel exducer size.(for example the GT3582 has a 82mm exd)... Where as PTE names their turbos based off of compressor wheel inducer size. (for example the PTE6262 has a 62mm ind)

I personally like the way Garrett names their turbos... A good rule of thumb is that if the compressor wheel is 82mm exd that means that turbo is capable of making 820crank hp on our evo. So about 700whp. This is more accurate on the HTA3582 than the standard GT3582. So to dumby it all down. lets use the HTA turbo which is really a Garrett turbo on crack...

HTA3076 - 760bhp
HTA3582 - 820bhp
HTA3586 - 860bhp
HTA3794 - 940bhp

Hope that is not to confusing. Let me know if you have any questions

Mikey

- Great info there Mikey.

OP-There are more people roaming this forum that wonder the same things and just don't ask. They make decisions about things and don't know what they're getting into.

In MOST instances, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked.

Search amazon.com for some books on turbos. I had bought a few about turbo systems prior to getting into the turbo world and it helped me out.

Goto garrett turbos website and look on there. There is a section where they explain everything about turbos, the meaning of all the numbers and how to read flow charts. Its written very well along with pictures so its fairly easy to understand

I believe the reason no one ask the question is because of the universal answer that every forum has...Google it...and the likelihood that it will be locked or deleted.
